Review: San Antonio Missions National Historical Park
Photos
Let’s start big picture. Tell us about the background of the park.
This national park paints a picture of South Texas in crisis in the 1700s. Threatened by sickness, drought, and raids on the area, people flocked to these missions for protection. The park and all of its missions offer free entry.
What's the mood like, and who do you see here?
The mood is reverential. Many visitors make a point of checking out all four missions, whether tourists from out of town or even first-time visitors from within San Antonio proper. Some also plan to attend church services, which are offered in both English and Spanish.
Got it. If you are so inclined, will guides help you navigate?
Park rangers and volunteers offer free guided tours of all four missions, weather permitting. The information and visitors' centers at each mission can tell you when the next tour begins.
That sounds cool. All said and done, what—and who—is this best for?
This is a great educational outing for anyone who is looking to dig deeper into Texas history and San Antonio's religious roots, especially those traveling with church groups or on a missions trip to the area.
