Okay folks, what do you think this coin grades at and what do you think I should've paid for it? I have no idea about how to grade gold coins as this is my very first one. Your insight on the overall grade, as well as that red mark on the left of the coin are appreciated. I apologize that I don't have my lamps that I usually photograph with; the lighting is pretty terrible and I had no idea how difficult it is to photograph gold coins! I tried a few photographs in hoping one would pan out. Thanks for your input!
Most probably been cleaned at one point , and most probably out of a ring or necklace s these smaller coins were in jewelry .
I don't see any evidence of ex-jewelry, paddy. But yes, I agree that the coin has definitely been cleaned. I'd call it EF details, cleaned. For value, Apmex has them listed at $288 for cleaned, $320 for EF. I would expect you paid somewhere in that range. 1907 is the most common of the common dates: http://www.apmex.com/category/11910/2-50-quarter-eagles-liberty-1840-1907 The red spots you see are called "copper spots." Some people find them attractive, some people don't. They are from local concentrations of copper alloy that didn't get perfectly mixed in.
Thanks for the explanation on the copper spot. I had a feeling it might have been cleaned. What do you think it's value is?
Your talking marks left by a bezel and was thinking copper alloy being a possible cause on the spot. However still a lot of details on the coin high points show a small amount or wear.
I was editing my post while you were posting, because I realized that I hadn't answered all your questions: For value, Apmex has them listed at $288 for cleaned, $320 for EF. Cleaned, and I would not pay over $230 or so, but I would try to sell it true auction for a small profit. If you are patient you can get them for the $230 or less range in this condition. I would hope mine would go for $280 or more though.
Well, thank you everyone for your feedback. The good thing about this coin is that it cost me $5-10 in raffle tickets at the Baltimore Show. I purchased them back in September and forgot all about them until I got a call two weekends ago that I had won second prize. I admit I was a little disappointed it wasn't MS and slabbed but I shouldn't be complaining when it was free. It is my first gold coin and will sit in my US Type Set 2.5 dollar spot until I can upgrade it.
XF at first glance but AU on second. Typical for the date and type that has been in Grandma purse for a hundred years. I love Quarter Eagles.
I've seen these grade MS with the same amount of field disturbances as your coin. Gold is tough because it's so soft. From your pics, I'd grade it AU. It does appear the fields have been cleaned, but I can't be definitive. Much easier to judge it in-hand. Either way, congrats on getting your first gold coin. I like it.
After hearing from you two weeks ago in a text message that you won a gold coin I was very excited for you. In fact it couldn't happen to a nicer person! "Good Karma" strikes again....another reason I myself had won a gold coin about 10 years ago at the Whitman show . As for somewhat disappointment don't be, as a friend ,as someone well old enough to be your father....you did very well! And again congrats
Congratulations! I would pick up an Intercept Shield holder for it or an Airtite (if they make the latter for these), which will protect the coin from further wear and damage.
Thanks, I definitely need something to store it in. I have it in a 2x2 at the moment, but that's not going to protect it for long.
