My uncle picked up a couple Morgan VAMs this past week. I have been able to verify all but one. This looks real to me but comes up as bad certification number on PCGS. Photos not great, these are what he sent me.
I don't like the looks of it. The slab looks like a generation 6.0 https://www.pcgs.com/holdermuseum Here's a comparison of the PCGS logo located on the back of the slab.
The QR code comes up with the same number. That should be a good sign. But PCGS Still didn't find it. Make an inquiry with PCGS.
@Mr. Numismatist Thanks for information. That definitely looks questionable. I haven't seen the coin in hand yet, so was holding judgement. The more I look the more questions I have. I let my uncle know I questioned the coin/holder. He submitted a request to PCGS to request information but has not heard back. I'm not holding my breath on this one.
I ran a check on the QR code also. it says "https://www.pcgs.com/cert/36495269". Hopefully PCGS can shed some light on this.
The photo gets blurry when I enlarge it. I don’t know about the very number but the O/S mint mark looks like mine but it’s really not that clear due to being blurry. Can he send you a better closeup photo? Also, is the obverse reslly pink or is that the lighting? Nice looking coin.
I think it's ok. If you search for the surrounding cert numbers (36495268, 36495270, 71) - they all come back as the same coin, so perhaps a bulk submission with a clerical error on that cert number?
Always suspicious of Morgan dollars, there are allot of fakes out there slab or no slab with these you really have to dive in to the research to make sure you have a genuine article.
Some of these Certs were removed because of counterfeit coins in counterfeit slabs. I am hoping for the best outcome. Good luck.
