Getting your first set of nice cookware is truly life-changing. Going from the big box store brand and hand-me-downs that are nearly 20 years old can completely alter the way you feel about cooking. It's not just the aesthetic. Quality cookware is made with more premium metals, so it creates a perfect sear, distributes heat evenly, and should last for years to come if taken care of well. A nice set of cookware can change someone who is completely reliant on Uber eats to Ina Garten's sous chef.

Maybe you're looking to finally upgrade from the pans your parents got as newlyweds that were passed down to you. Or you're looking for that perfect Christmas gift for a first-time homebuyer or a wedding present to get the newlyweds marriage off to a stellar start. Cookware sets make great college graduation gifts as well. Whatever brought you here, we're here to help. We surveyed our editors on their all-time favorite cookware options—think "what cookware would you use the rest of your life"—and rounded up this list of 10 just for you. So, dig in and get ready to get cooking.

American Kitchen Cookware Best Non-Stick Cookware

You'll hear some kitchen pros scoff at the idea of using non-stick cookware, but we're big fans. For starters, you can't beat how easy non-stick pans are to clean—food slides right out. We love this set because while the interior of the skillet is non-stick, the exterior is stainless steel, which retains heat incredibly. This set is also extremely durable, in part because only the interior has a non-stick coating. Non-stick coating is safe, but you'll want to toss non-stick pans when the coating does begin to wear away. Less coating = less wearing away. For kitchen novices (or anyone who hates doing dishes), these pans will be your new best friend. Will they get you the perfect sear on your fish? No, but it will be a pretty darn good sear and you won't be scraping burnt fish for 20 minutes off the bottom of the pan, and that's a win for us.

If you only want one form of cookware that's both practical and durable, stainless steel is for you. It transitions from stovetop to oven and has the ability to sear meat to perfection. This set even comes with a grill pan, cutting down on your cookware even more. Don't worry about clearing out all the cabinets—this set barely takes up any space.

Mauviel Best Copper Cookware

Copper cookware has a time and place, but when you need it, nothing works better. Unlike some other metals used for cooking, copper is a great heat conductor but doesn't retain heat well, which makes it great for dishes that need a quick flash of heat, like fish. This set is definitely on the pricier side, but it's the best copper cookware you'll find.

Hestan Best Splurge

Best Splurge

Unlike the copper counterpart above, this stainless steel set heats slowly but retains heat over time. This makes it perfect for thick meats like steak or chicken breasts as well as soups and sauces. What makes this set worth the money? Usually, a downside to stainless steel cookware is the difficulty to clean, but that's not the case with Hestan's. According to our Senior Food & Gardens Editor, "it’s basically indestructible. You can sear steak and then rinse it off and it’s gleaming again. It’s wild!"

Le Creuset Best Cast Iron Set

When it comes to buying cast iron cookware, you've got two options: enameled and regular. Both have amazing features—it's why they're some of our favorite pans—but when it comes to purchasing a whole set, the practicality of enameled cast iron wins out for us. And no one does the enameled cast iron game like Le Creuset. Their iconic colors make a statement in your kitchen and they're sure to last you a lifetime.
