Introduction

You will learn all about the different types of volcanoes, and what they are made up of. You will learn new vocabulary, and even get to make your very own volcano. At the end of the this unit, you will present your model volcano to the class and even make it erupt!

Task

Process

Volcanoes

First things first! You must learn what a volcano really is! 

volcano is an opening on the surface of a planet or moon that allows material warmer than its surroundings to escape from its interior. When this material escapes, it causes an eruption.

Types of Volcanoes

There are three main types of volcanoes: cinder cone volcano, shield volcanoes, & composite volcanoes.

Learning the parts

You must study the vocab and learn what the parts of a volcano really are! You will be assigned a worksheet that proves you know not only the definitions of these words, but also where they can be found.

Building Your Own Volcano!

Materials

  • 6 cups flour
  • 2 cups salt
  • 4 tbsp. veggie oil
  • 2 cups warm water
  • Red food coloring
  • 5 drops dishwashing detergent
  • 2 tbsp. baking soda
  • Vin
  • 1 empty soda bottle
  • Serving tray
  • Paint

Making the volcano

  1.  Mix your flour, salt, oil and water until firm
  2. Place soda bottle on serving tray & form your mixture around the bottle to form a volcano (leave the opening of the bottle clear)
  3. Allow to dry
  4. Paint your volcano!
  5. Fill your bottle 2/3 full with warm water
  6. Add a couple drops of red food coloring, detergent, and baking soda to the water
  7. Add vinegar and watch it erupt!

Evaluation

You will be graded upon your knowledge on the parts, and types of volcanoes

Along with the appearance of your model volcano

Conclusion

Now you have learned all about the types & parts of volcanoes! you should now be able to identify the three types of volcanoes: Cinder Cone, Shield, and Composite. You should be familiar with the parts of volcanoes. I hope you all learned something new, and had a fun time doing it!
