A huge sea creature has been found washed up on a beach in the UK, leaving baffled locals freaked out.

Stunned passer-by Richard Walden made the gruesome discovery on Woolacombe beach in north Devon at the weekend.

He posted pictures of his eerie finding from Saturday morning on A Place in North Devon Facebook group, reports Devon Live .

He asked: "Anyone have any idea what type of animal this might be?

“If it was stretched out I’d guess up to 3 metres long. Guessing squid/octopus."

It is not the first stomach-churning discovery on Devon's beaches, either.

A blood-sucking sea lamprey was found washed up on Exmouth beach earlier in the summer.

Usually found in Spain and Portugal, the lamprey has become rare in recent decades due to pollution in the rivers.

They use their many sharp teeth to latch on to bigger animals, such as sharks, to feed on its blood.

A heaving mass of rare goose barnacles was also found at Hartland Abbey beach in north Devon.

The remains – which resemble a dolphin or porpoise – appeared to have been burnt after it was washed up as it was also covered in some kind of tar-like substance.

Finally, in 2009, the corpse of a creature was found washed up on Croyde beach.

Speculation at the time was that it could have been the legendary Beast of Exmoor, but it is believed to have been a rotted seal.
