Murdoc, 2-D and the rest of the cartoons are the virtual band’s official members.
But in reality Damon and Jamie Hewlett are the driving force behind the collaborative project.
Jamie, who designs the visuals, said: “We will be 50, we can’t continue doing this thing seriously for very long.
“Can you imagine the kids in 20 years when they discover that Gorillaz is hiding two senile old 70-year-olds?”
With a current roll call including Vince Staples and Danny Brown, Jamie can see a future of the band without himself or Damon as Gorillaz were always intended to be faceless.
Jamie added: “It is the essence of the rest of the Gorillaz story, even if it is not ours necessarily.”
Recalling the original concept, Damon said: “Over time I realised being a celebrity was a lot less important than preserving my freedom.”
More than 50,000 fans celebrate their new album with a massive eclectic Demon Dayz all-dayer in Margate today.
Jamie, who has decorated the Dreamland Amusement Park in Kent for the event, added: “It’s the only time we’ll get to play the record with the full cast list.”
The elusive Popcaan is expected to come over from Jamaica too.
Damon said: “Getting him was determination.
“I tried to sing like him through autotune but it didn’t work!”
Red Bull TV will screen the Demon Dayz show live.

Taylor Swift has taken her feud with Katy Perry to another level.
The country pop gal finally released all her music on Spotify yesterday, the very same day as KP’s new album Witness arrived.
Taylor, who is also on Amazon Music, claims it’s to celebrate her 1989 album selling 10 million copies.
But the coincidence is too much for some fans, who called the move “petty”.
Katy admits the pair have “issues”, telling this week’s NME: “I’m also not a pushover.”

Two of UK house music’s top names have joined forces for single Real Life featuring NAATIONS.
Duke Dumont, AKA Adam Dyment, and Gorgon City’s Matt Robson-Scott told me how the summer banger, inspired by Ibiza, happened.
Whose idea was it?
Matt: “He was in LA we were in London. We sent ideas back and forth and came out with the final mix quickly. It feels like a summer banger.”
Adam: “I’ve known Gorgon City for long time, I remember wandering around a Belgium festival getting drunk with them years ago.
“This is a stab at the UK pop charts. It’s got a Baby D Let Me Be Your Fantasy type of vocal that connects with people.”
Who did what on the record?
Matt: “We love Duke’s production, the way the bass is really strong. We consciously made sure each element had its own space. It has weight to it, the drums are very punchy.”
Is Ibiza still the go-to place for clubbers?
Adam: “It’s still the Mecca for me, especially house music. Myself and Gorgon City are at Amnesia this year. The timing is perfect.”
Can dance music still trouble the pop charts?
Matt: “It’s changed drastically because of streaming. Three years ago us, Duke and loads of others were in the Top 10. Now there’s only maybe one or two in the Top 20. But the scene is still strong.”
Adam: “It’s hard for a new act. UK radio needs to show respect to UK talent.”

Parisiens possess a certain “je ne sais quoi”.
But Bella Hadid was more “je ne wear pas bra” when she visited the French capital.
The model was catching up with designers at the Dior offices.
Presumably she was there to complain about a lack of support.

If you are wondering where Little Mix get their good style and looks from, check out the new video to Power.
Besides drag queens, and guest star Stormzy, the vid features great cameos by all their lovely mothers.
Maybe they should form their own group – Big Mix anyone?
I’d certainly have a poster of of Leigh-Anne Pinnock’s ma Deborah Thornhill on my wall.
The girls will be rocking the Capital Summertime Ball at Wembley Stadium this weekend.
Tune in from 6am for coverage on Capital and watch on Capital TV from 7pm.

Festival fans of all sizes are partying at the Isle Of Wight Festival.
And Rag’n’Bone Man’s unborn child has already bagged a cute souvenir babygrow courtesy of head honcho John Giddings.
Just slightly older, Abbey Clancy got in the mood early by arriving on the island in last year’s festival vest.
Last night saw Run DMC hit the stage and they demanded an all-American rider of deli sandwiches, Oreo cookies and Lipton ice tea.
What’s wrong with Typhoo?
