BlackBerry Messenger hits 100million downloads but it's no match for WhatsApp
BLACKBERRY announce record figures but they're tiny compared to the competition.
Before the smartphone took the world by storm BlackBerry's messaging app was one of the most popular ways to keep in touch.
But as new messaging apps hit the market BBM became popularity began to dwindle.
To hit back, BlackBerry launched their service on other platforms and the app has now been downloaded 100million times on the Google Play Store.
In a post on the company's blog, BlackBerry said, 'BBM for Android has officially achieved a milestone on the Google Play Store: 100 million installs.
'That puts BBM in the top tier of messaging apps on Google Play, and we got there in a little over a year as we first posted BBM for Android in late October 2013. We have 3.7 million reviews, and just shy of 2.4 million of them are five stars.'
It's clearly a huge figure but it might not be time for BlackBerry to have a well done party just yet.
Although the app has been downloaded 100m times that doesn't mean 100m people are using it.
In fact, recent reports suggest the service has around 91m active users.
This is a tiny figure in the world of messaging with WhatsApp looking after 700m monthly users and achieving over 1billion app downloads.
BlackBerry are clearly keen to keep pushing their BBM app and have just given it a major update.
The latest Android app, version 2.7, adds Android Wear support and the ability to share photos in group chats, among other features.
But, it seems they may have a long way to go until they can knock WhatsApp off the messaging the top spot.
