South Park: Snow Day! should have been a great co-op snow fighting game.

The series game makers have already delivered some decent RPG titles in the run up to this release.

But sadly Snow Day isn’t up there at the same level.

You play, as in previous South Park games, the ‘new kid’ on a snowy day where school has been called off.

All the local kids are playing, enacting a battle between Elves and Wizards.

And you’re in the middle of the fighting as series legend Cartman, dressed as a wizard, barks the orders.

Being the new kid basically means you get to design your own unique looking animated character for the game.

But that is where things start to plateau.

Because once you dive into Snow Day the actual gameplay itself is often lacking and dull.

The third-person multiplayer co-op brawler is difficult to control and clunky at times.

I couldn’t get my character to do what I wanted in the throes of battle on more than one occasion.

It left me feeling frustrated more than the overall enjoyment of the play fighting with rival South Park kids.

And when teaming up with three others online that just makes things awkward.

That classic cartoon humour that makes the telly show such a draw to fans was eerily missing for large parts of the title too.

Yes there are sweary moments of fun, but simply not enough.

One decent thing to mention is the use of a card game system within each section of the game that helps to level up your character.

It allows you to build momentum and increase your chances in the final boss battles.

More of that ingenuity across the gameplay would’ve raised the bar here.

But as it stands we have a rather generic and repetitive short lived battle game that’s lacking any real gameplay innovation.

The story is dull and there are not enough laughs.

VERDICT 2/5
