A "rich" bloke was chased by a waiter over a £429 tip and says he'll never return to the town again.

The loaded Italian holidaymaker got the shock of his life after a waiter chased him down at a posh French Riviera eatery for not leaving a hefty enough tip despite coughing up a whopping £429 (€500). The cashed-up tourist, described as "very rich" by the local press, has now sworn off the French Riviera for good.

The high-roller had thought he was being pretty generous with his £429 tip. But, in jaw-dropping scenes, a waiter legged it to the car park of the plush resort venue to tell him it just didn't cut the mustard, with the cheeky staff member insisting the punter hadn't hit the "minimum" a grand total of £859 (€1000).

A mate of the gobsmacked tycoon told the French journal Nice Matin: "[He] thought he had been generous by leaving €500, instead he was reprimanded.

"The waiter told him that it wasn't enough and that he could still make a small effort to reach €1,000 because it was more consistent in approaching 20% of the total amount of his bill."

While the French Riviera might be a playground for the swanky set, some of its restaurants are reportedly going overboard, making even the loaded think twice. Another vacationer reportedly witnessed a joint demanding at least £1,288 (€1,500) a head to even grab a bite there, reports the Express.

Just like our indignant Italian, this sightseer has vowed to give Saint-Tropez the cold shoulder from here on out.

Restaurateurs on the Riviera are causing a stir with their outrageous demands, as one gobsmacked businessperson was handed a flyer in Ramatuelle, near Saint-Tropez, offering "premium" tables for a jaw-dropping £85,900 (€100,000).

It's been reported that restaurant staff are sizing up customers by their apparent wealth and that local eateries have started a 'black list' of stingy tippers.
