<p>The Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and Dialysis Unit in the hospital will soon have doctors and nurses from private hospital to attend to patients. One of the reasons why PPP was initiated was because the Jayanagar General Hospital has only specialist doctors as there is an acute shortage of junior doctors and general physicians. <br /><br />"Our hospital has only specialist doctors who are preoccupied with their work. Besides attending to patients at the causality; they also attend to OPD patients with basic health problem like cold and fever," said Medical Superintendent of the hospital Dr Nagaraj. He said due to shortage of junior doctors, specialist doctors' time is also being wasted in attending to medico-legal cases at the courts. <br /><br />There are 42 sanctioned positions for doctors, out of which 34 specialists and senior medical officers are working at the hospital at present.<br /><br />No anaesthetists <br /><br />The ICU Unit in the hospital too does not have specialised doctors particularly anaesthetists. "The hospital has a well equipped ICU ward, but is unable to perform certain specialised surgeries as there is no anaesthetists available," said Mukund Rao, member of the Jayanagar Citizens' Forum.<br /><br />Even the 'annual maintenance contractor' in charge of maintaining medical equipment, does not do any justice to his job which affects the utilisation and functioning of costly medical equipment. Instead of one year contract, we want the contract period to be extended to three years, he added.<br /><br />Slow progress <br /><br />Besides this, there is slow progress of civil works being carried out at the hospital. Works are either commissioned late or progressing slowly. Jayanagar MLA B N Vijaykumar who has taken the initiative to develop the hospital told Deccan Herald that the PWD Engineer appointed are not competent enough to carry out construction works at the hospital. <br /><br />"Construction work at the hospital is being carried out from a very long time. We have requested the officials concerned to appoint a capable engineer and supervisor who can understand the hospital designs well," he said.<br /><br />The hospital also needs a Blood Bank, computerised hospital management system to avoid paper work, toilets for visitors to be constructed and direct power line from Bescom.<br /></p>
