EastEnders has cast Hollywood star Patrick Bergin to play new villain Aidan Maguire.
Described as "high status, enigmatic and full of charm", Aidan is an old friend of Phil Mitchell who he met when they were in jail together back in 2005.
The prison pals formed a strong friendship during their time inside and their old bond is instantly reignited when Aidan turns up on Phil's doorstep later this year.
Fans will have to wait and see whether Aidan's arrival tempts Phil back to the dark side, but given that they both have a passion for dabbling in things that aren't exactly legit, it's highly likely.
Either way, we can confirm that Aidan is being brought in as part of an explosive Christmas storyline involving Phil and Mick Carter – and his presence in Walford is certainly going to be felt...
Speaking about his casting, Patrick said: "I am delighted to be joining EastEnders as I have watched and admired it since the days of Dirty Den.
"It is an iconic show that has the ability to shape the way people think, whilst also telling big explosive stories that keep the audience gripped. I am really looking forward to seeing what they have in store for Aidan as it's bound to be dramatic."
EastEnders' Creative Director John Yorke added: "EastEnders deserves the very best and in Patrick we are absolutely privileged to have a truly great actor join the show.
"It's a huge honour to have him on board, where he'll be working hand in hand with Phil Mitchell and Mick Carter to carry a truly explosive storyline for Christmas and New Year. We can't wait to get started."
Patrick has starred in many films and television dramas including Mountains of the Moon, Dracula, Robin Hood, Red Rock and most famously Sleeping with the Enemy.
Patrick will start filming this month and will appear on screen towards the end of the year.
EastEnders continues tomorrow (September 12) at 7.30pm on BBC One.
