Misfits is heading to the US, with Freeform giving a pilot order to an adaptation of the UK superhero drama.

According to Deadline, the series is being written and produced by iZombie and Veronica Mars' Diane Ruggiero-Wright.

Unlike the British series, the US Misfits will be exposed to a mysterious chemical, rather than a supernatural storm – still giving them those all-important powers.

The group of young offenders in a community-service scheme will be played by Ashleigh LaThrop (Sirens) as spoiled party girl Alicia, Tre Hall as talented but cocky footballer Curtis, Jake Cannavale (Nurse Jackie) as con artist Nathan, and Allie MacDonald (Orphan Black) as street-smart Kelly.

If the pilot goes to series, Ruggiero-Wright will serve as showrunner, with Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage.

The original, BAFTA-winning Misfits – starring Robert Sheehan, Iwan Rheon, Antonia Thomas, Lauren Socha and Nathan Stewart-Jarrett – ran for five series between 2009 and 2013.

A movie based on the show was briefly in the works, with series creator Howard Overman writing a first draft script.

However, Game of Thrones star Rheon – who played Simon – later told Digital Spy that the film was stuck in development hell as of 2014.

Meanwhile, Deadline adds that Overman will be exec producing the US remake, despite previously telling Digital Spy he's not involved.
