Deborah Kelly Hyland was raised in the West Brighton section of Staten Island, where she attended Sacred Heart grammar school and was a proud and faithful parishioner all her life. She went on to graduate from St. Joseph Hill Academy.
Deborah graduated from the former St. Luke’s School of Nursing in Manhattan, then earned a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing at Boston College and went to earn a graduate degree in public health nursing from New York University.
She married Stephen Hyland in 1973, and the couple raised her two sons (Patrick and Timothy) in the West Brighton section of Staten Island as well enrolling them at Sacred Heart.
Deborah applied her extensive education in a long, varied and distinguished career, largely in a supervisory capacity, in the fields of psychiatry, emergency medicine and as an instructor at College of Staten Island, St. Vincent’s School of Nursing and Kingsborough College.
By choice, she spent much of her career at Richmond University Medical Center (formerly St. Vincent’s), in her home community. She truly loved the profession; especially taking care of patients in the hospital. Those that knew her well were truly blessed.
She is predeceased by her parents James, Jeanne (Aldo Benedetto) and sister Nancy McVey (brother-in-law James). She is survived by her husband of 48 years Stephen, two sons (Patrick and Timothy), daughter-in-law Lindsay, and two grandchildren (Keira and Fiona).
Wake will be held at Casey’s Funeral Home at 350 Slosson Avenue on Monday, October 25th from 4:00-8:00 PM. Funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday, October 26th at Sacred Heart Church at 10:45 AM. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be sent in her name to Sacred Heart Church.
