DS Smith partners with FAB FEST to support smart city sustainability

DS Smith has pledged its support to developing the smart cities of tomorrow, through an innovative partnership with this year’s FAB FEST.

The international event, which takes place between 2-10 July in London, brings together the world’s most high-achieving architectural students to celebrate cutting-edge design and fabrication capability.

Organised by the Fabrication Laboratory and the Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment at the University of Westminster, the event will see teams from 15 different countries create their ideas for the cities of tomorrow, using recycled cardboard and plastic sheets. Through its packaging and plastic divisions, DS Smith will provide the materials to make this happen.

As part of the agreement, DS Smith will enter a team to design and build a pop up city pavilion, providing an opportunity to showcase the company’s creative design capabilities.

Tim Price, Marketing Director – Recycling Division, at DS Smith, commented:

Supporting FAB FEST is a great opportunity to engage with the architects of tomorrow and encourage sustainable thinking for the future. By providing materials for the event and demonstrating how they can be effectively recycled afterwards, we can demonstrate the instrumental role recycling has to play in smart cities.

Following the event, DS Smith will recycle all materials used, through its state-of-the-art processing facilities in West London. Simple yet effective, the sustainable partnership will ensure FAB FEST has a minimal carbon footprint – truly innovative thinking.

Dr David Scott, the Director of the Fabrication Laboratory at the University if Westminster, added

We are delighted that DS Smith has agreed to provide our teams with such high-quality materials. We can’t wait to see what sorts of wonderful components and architectural installations are created through innovative fabrication processes and applying their ingenuity!
