Gardai are appealing for witnesses to come forward after a car entered the Grand Canal in Kildare on Sunday evening.

The road traffic incident occurred at approximately 8pm when it is believed a car entered the Grand Canal at Grangeclare West, Kilmeague. A man, aged in his 40s, was recovered from the water and treated by crew from the National Ambulance Service.

He was pronounced deceased at the scene. The body of the man has been removed from the scene and a post mortem will take place.

The scene is currently held for examination by Forensic Collision Investigators and the Garda Water Unit. Access along the canal at this location is currently restricted. Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to come forward.

A garda spokesperson said: "Those with camera footage, including motorists with dash-cam, from the area at the time are asked to provide it to investigating Gardaí.

"Anyone with any information is asked to contact Naas Garda Station on 045 884300, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station."
