“The Gold Coast mixes the old and the new to impressive effect.“… “The 8th (is) a shorter version of the spectacular 16th at Cyprus Point.” Dermot Gileece, The Irish Times
Recently developed from a 9 hole to and 18 hole championship length course with unrivaled view of Ocean and Helvick Head. The original 9 holes were planted in 1939, and these trees have grown tall and thick. The mature tree line lined fairways of the older holes are cleverly mingled with the long and challenging newer holes. The 256 yards first gets a most enjoyable round off to a challenging start, for this is one of the original holes and is lined on both sides of the fairway by trees.
The 15th par four of 397 yards, is probably the signature hole with tee shots needing to carry an inlet of the Bay to reach the haven of the fairway and from there it is a testing medium to long iron to reach a well protected green.
The finish at the Gold Coast is, in fact, one of the most testing anywhere. The 16th is a par five of 520 yards, the 17th a cracking four of 473 yards and the 18th a monster 561 yards. Maurice Fives, the course architect, cleverly mingled the old and new until now the Gold Coast Golf Course boasts a 6740 yards, par 72 layout that will certainly test the most seasoned golfers. For the ladies the 5,531 yard course is equally demanding and rewarding.
