The significance of glass in buildings can hardly be overestimated. In the façade and the roof, it fulfils a vital role in the interaction between a building and its surroundings. Not only in terms of light, heat, and noise transmission, but also in a communicative, aesthetic and visual sense. In the interior too, glass is at the forefront. Walls, doors, stairs, and floors are often (partially) constructed from glass. More and more often, it is used structurally, as shear walls, columns or beams.

Developments in glass applications are progressing...

Developments in glass applications are progressing rapidly. Increasingly large sizes are becoming available. Improved interlayers and reinforcement techniques enhance structural possibilities. Purposes are being integrated: switchable coatings, photovoltaics, LED lighting, and electric heating can be applied. Cold and hot bent glass, cast and tubular glass, transparent polymers and structural adhesive connections open up a world of design possibilities.

Services
Witteveen+Bos utilises the possibilities glass offers as a building material. We offer the following services:

  • Design & Detailling
  • Specifications
  • Safety Analyses
  • Structural Analyses and Checking
  • Damage Inquiries

We can assist in design, establish safety concepts, develop details, and determine material and finishing specifications. If required, we involve Building Physics experts. For structural analyses, Finite Element (FE-) calculations are usually required to accurately predict stress distributions, for which Witteveen+Bos has the dedicated software package SJ Mepla available. To analyse the behaviour of complex structures, we apply general FEM software. If required, we can assist on-site testing and conduct damage inquiries.

Off the beaten track
Glass is applied in many ways in buildings, varying from standard windows to complete load bearing structures. New frontiers are constantly explored. The possibilities exceed day-to-day practice by far. We are willing to explore these frontiers with and for our clients.
