‘What’s up?’ I asked. ‘It’s the apartment we own in Florida,’ Dad said. ‘The old couple who’ve been renting it are moving out. I suppose I’ll have to fly down there and organise cleaners.’ It was the early ‘90s and I was at home in Rhode Island, New York State, having recently graduated from university. My parents had bought the Florida apartment for their retirement, but Mum had died of cancer in 1990, and Dad had ended up renting it out.
