In his new book, The History Makers, Richard Cohen tells a story from the golden age of historians’ rivalries.
That was not so long ago – in the 1960s, when, he was told, the obituaries desk of the Daily Telegraph realised that they didn’t have an obit prepared of the two best-known – and most disputatious – historians of the day, AJP Taylor and Hugh Trevor-Roper.
The tempting idea arose of asking Trevor-Roper to prepare the – anonymous – obit of Taylor.
