New evidence on statins side-effects

LIFE-SAVING statins are likely to cause far fewer side-effects than people believe, anew study has found. The drugs help to lower the level of LDL (otherwise known as ‘bad’ cholesterol) in the blood, which is linked to cardiovascular disease and can increase the chance of strokes and heart attacks.

Statins are taken by about eight million people in the UK and are among the most commonly-prescribed drugs in Britain but, despite being potential life-savers, up to half of those prescribed the drugs stop taking them, cut the dose or take them irregularly.
