Q&A SHORE ANGLING

Q I feel like my sea fishing has improved greatly over the past couple of years and I would like to give saltwater match fishing a try. To be honest with you, I’m actually a bit worried about making a total fool of myself. Having had some bad experiences fishing coarse fishing matches in my younger years, I was wondering if you could tell me what the sea fishing match scene is like?

JM says: For me, match fishing is a hugely important part of our sea angling community. My advice would be to ask other sea anglers in your area who regularly attend fishing matches and try to work out what you would best enjoy. On the whole, I would say that sea fishing matches are very different to the course fishing ones which can be a little stiff at times. I’ve also made some amazing friends over the years through fishing sea angling competitions and would highly recommend it to anyone wanting to give it a go for that reason. Just remember, don’t be afraid to talk, introduce yourself and ask lots of questions. I can’t guarantee everyone will be friendly but you will soon work out who is and I’m certain they will be willing to offer you help if needed.

Q I am generally quite a loud person who enjoys the craic when out fishing. My mates often tell me to pipe down because I could be scaring the fish away. I must say, my catch record in recent times is pretty poor and I am now wondering if there is any truth in what my mates keep saying?
