For many in North America, fall means Thanksgiving. Families gather around to feast on turkey, stuffing, and mashed potatoes—and don’t forget the pumpkin pie for dessert. Many people groan and hold their stomachs as they push themselves away from their empty plates. The holiday is about being grateful, but it’s also about eating.
Long ago there were no supermarkets, no take-out food, and no pizza delivery. People lived by gathering, hunting, and growing all the food they ate. This way of life is not easy.
