After a night of rest and recreation in Bayeux, and an obligatory visit to the Commonwealth War Graves cemetery, we shifted our attention to the American sector with a drive to Sainte Mère Église. This included a quick stop at the infamous Band of Brothers site at Brécourt Manor before visiting the bridge at La Fière and walking the causeway across the Merderet. We somehow crammed in a few museums before relocating to Omaha Beach, visiting the American cemetery at Colville-Sur-Mer, and spending time at the defensive point at WN62, where Heinrich Severloh, the “Butcher of Omaha” set about his gory work with his MG42.
