THE BEAR'S BARGAIN

To make sure his neighbour wouldn't try to take his fruit, the wealthy man made a bargain with the woodcutter.

“If any pears fall on your side of the fence, you can keep them – but you mustn't come into my orchard and pick them from the branches!”

The woodcutter thought this was fair. He and his wife watched the pears grow riper every day. They wished they could taste them, but the fruit never fell on their side of the fence. It was most upsetting!
