      Section 1 – Verb Introduction

      Part 1: Verb – Introduction

      A verb in a sentence is an action word.

      It indicates what the subject is doing.

      (subject) + (verb) + rest of sentence.

      I (subject) + walk (verb) + rest of sentence.

      I walk to school every day.

      This means that walk is the verb.

      I is the subject of the sentence doing the action, which is walk.

      Note 1:

      In the present tense, the verb is conjugated with the subject.

      I sing a song.

      She sings well.

      Note2:

      Third person singular is conjugated with an "s" at the end of the verb.

      The frog jumps.

      The girl laughs.

      He dances.

      Note 3:

      Verbs also indicate when an action is taking place.

      It is important to know when an action is taking place as the action will follow the correct verb tense.

      Present tense: actions that take place in the present.

      John plays with the dog.

      Past tense: actions that took place in the past.

      John played with the dog yesterday.

      Future tense: actions that will take place in the future.

      John will play with the dog tomorrow.

      Exercise 1: Highlight the verbs from the following sentences.

      1. The cat jumps over the fence.

      2. She writes in her diary every day.

      3. I brush my teeth morning and night.

      4. You drive the bus every morning.

      5. The baby sleeps in the crib.

      6. I watch comedy films every Saturday.

      7. The teacher speaks loudly.

      8. She eats apples every day.

      9. Nancy sings opera very well.

      10. Jason drives a motorboat.

      Part 2: Simple Present

      A verb in the Simple Present tense explains that an action is happening in the present, right now.

      I (subject) + walk (verb walk) + rest of sentence.

      I walk to school every day.

      Nancy (subject) + walks (verb walk in the third person) + rest of sentence.

      Nancy walks to school every day.

      I walk fast.

      Nancy walks fast.

      They speak loud.

      It (the dog) runs fast.

      Examples of verbs walk, call, play

      Walk: I walk, you walk, he walks, she walks, it walks, we walk, you walk, they walk

      Call: I call, you call, he calls, she calls, it calls, we call, you call, they call

      Play: I play, you play, he plays, she plays, it plays, we play, you play, they play.

      Rules

      • For the present tense, use the infinitive of the verb.

      • For the third person singular use s at the end of the verb.

      • s sound is pronounced at the end of the word.

      • he for masculine

      • she for feminine

      • it for others (animals, cars, things, objects)

      Note 1:

      Words in a sentence such as: every day, every week, right now, are indicators that the action is happening in the present.

      Every day, Nancy walks her dog.

      John plays football every Tuesday.

      Note 2:

      Occasionally, these words are not included in the sentence however the sense of the sentence is still in the Simple Present tense.

      Is she working? Yes she is.

      Exercise 1: Determine the correct Simple Present tense for each verb.

      Exercise 2: Determine the correct Simple Present tense of the verb to complete the following sentences.

      1. She __________(enjoy, enjoys) classical music.

      2. John __________(read, reads) his favorite book.

      3. I __________ (run, runs) for the bus almost every morning.

      4. The opera singer __________(like, likes) to practice her voice.

      5. Every morning I __________(receive, receives) the newspaper.

      6. He __________ (clean, cleans) the kitchen right after cooking.

      7. For breakfast, she __________(drink, drinks) black coffee.

      8. On weekends, we __________ (shop, shops) with our friends.

      9. She __________(want, wants) to visit Spain one day.

      10. You __________ (live, lives) in a quiet neighborhood.

      11. Rosie __________ (call, calls) her mother every Friday.

      12. Nancy __________ (arrive, arrives) late for work every morning.

      13. The teenager __________ (listen, listens) to rock music.

      14. The director __________(prepare, prepares) the office meeting.

      15. We __________(ride, rides) our bikes to town.

      Part 3: Simple Present verb be

      Note:

      There are no rules for irregular verbs. They must be learned by heart. Common examples of irregular verbs are be, do, have, go, see, take, feel.

      The verb "be" is an irregular verb and is conjugated as follows in the Simple Present tense.

      I (subject) + am (verb be) + rest of sentence.

      I am happy to see my grandmother.

      They (subject) + are (verb be) + rest of sentence.

      They are at the library,

      "Be" in the present tense

      I am at home.

      You are at work.

      He is in the building.

      She is at work.

      It is here.

      We are at the studio.

      You are at the restaurant.

      They are at the park.

      "Be" in the present tense

      am, are, is

      Exercise 1: Determine the correct verb "be" in the Simple Present tense.

      Exercise 2: Determine the correct verb "be" in the Simple Present tense.

      4. It __________ (is, are, am) a pleasure to meet you.

      5. The cakes that __________ (is, are, am) on the table look delicious.

      6. Jane __________ (is, are, am) a nurse who works at the clinic.

      7. They __________(is, are, am) at the office.

      8. We __________ (is, are, am) late again for the appointment.

      9. I __________(is, are, am) happy to take Spanish lessons.

      10. They__________ (is, are, am) travelling to Paris.

      Part 3 -1: Forming questions with verb BE

      We have seen that the verb be in the Simple Present tense is conjugated with the subject.

      As well, the verb "be" is also used when formulating questions. In this case, the verb be becomes a helping verb referred to as an auxiliary verb, placed in front of the subject.
