ABOUT MOM, DAD, STUDENT AND TEACHER ENGLISH
It is well-accepted in the field of Applied Linguistics that an effective way of acquiring vocabulary while learning a second language is to engage in conversations because conversations present words, not in isolation, but in context; that is, not in artificial textbook language but in the communications that take place in authentic, real-life settings.
Usually, conversational textbooks present one conversation per setting such as At the Hospital or At the Bank. However, a number of vocabulary- building theoretical frameworks suggest that, not only is it necessary to learn words in context, but also to learn them in depth. That is, it is essential to meet the words and practice them time and again until you are able to incorporate them easily into your productive vocabulary.
Mom, Dad, Student And Teacher English , and the other five books in the series, are meant to be used as follows: You are free to reproduce the conversations and to distribute them to your students. You are also free to use the model lesson plan at the end of the book as it is presented or as you adapt it to your own teaching environment. In addition, you are invited to contact me through my website etextbookesl.com or through my links to Facebook, Blogger, Google+ and LinkedIn with comments or questions.
What Mom, Dad, Student And Teacher English will do for you, if you are an ESL teacher of Spanish-dominant learners of English, is to provide you with an e-textbook with 20 English conversations likely to take place in one setting. The setting for this booklet is the school environment. Each conversation is followed by its Spanish translation. Each fifth conversation is followed by a lesson on numbers and a set of practice questions. Use these conversations and exercises to increase your students’ vocabulary and, thus, to expand their knowledge and appreciation of English.
CONVERSATION 1
DOÑA LUISA: Can you help me, please?
DORIS: Sure! What can I do for you?
DOÑA LUISA: How do I get to Lucy’s school?
DORIS: Oh, you don’t have to drive Lucy to school. A school bus will pick her up.
DOÑA LUISA: Where does Lucy take the bus?
DORIS: I don’t know, but the school will send you a schedule of bus stops.
DOÑA LUISA: I have the schedule right here. Can you help me find her stop?
DORIS: Let’s see. Here it is. Her stop is at the corner of Broad and Center.
DOÑA LUISA: When does the bus come?
DORIS: It tells you right here. The bus arrives at Broad and Center at 7:45.
DOÑA LUISA: What happens if she misses the bus? Can she
