Summer had ended in 1910 when Lucy Maud Montgomery laid down her pen with genuine regret. She had just finished writing her fourth book, The Story Girl. Sitting at her table by the window in her dear white room, the author mentally bade farewell to her characters and, in a sense, to her youth.

Montgomery sensed that The Story Girl would be the last book she would ever write in her home in Cavendish, Prince Edward Island, where she had dreamt, suffered, and grown up.
