After many years as a scoutmaster teaching boys to cook he decided to put his recipes together and find other peoples favorite family recipes from around the community and put them together into a cookbook that he could share. At first it was a fund raiser for scouts to go to camp and then it has just evolved over time as a great collection of family recipes that anyone with a Dutch oven can use to cook, over an open fire, with briquettes or just in your house oven. Simple easy recipes.
There is nothing better than being at the family cabin and cooking a great meal and being with family. Some of the family favorites are the Dutch oven lasagna or the stew. We hope you have as much enjoyment from cooking and sharing these recipes as we have had making this book and cooking these recipes in our family.

Grandpa John’s Famous Dutch Oven Recipes - John Davidson
Introduction
Dutch oven, in today’s usage, is a heavy metal, covered pot that is used for cooking. The Dutch ovens are either made of aluminum (relatively light in weight) or cast iron (very heavy). Majority of today’s Dutch oven are made with legs to support them over the source of heat.
I think cooking in a Dutch oven is one of the pleasures of life. It’s not easy to duplicate the feeling of cooking outdoors in a big pot over hot coals. It’s not easy to duplicate that flavor too –a cross between using a slow cooker and cooking over a fire.
Dutch ovens have been around for decades and decades. Now that many people do their daily cooking indoors in modern ovens and on stoves, Dutch oven cooking seems like is more for campers and hobbyists. It’s a lot of fun and if you have not enjoyed Dutch oven cooking as the eater or cook, you have been missing out a lot!
Cooking with a Dutch oven might seem a bit complicated or intimidating. I totally agree! However, what you put into the Dutch oven is pretty uncomplicated and simple; the cooking part is where it can become a bit tricky. There is a little learning curve to understand the temperature and timing, but once you cover these two things, you’ll be set.
Dutch ovens are incredibly versatile –you can bake or cook practically anything. So, the time has come to pull out your most favorite recipes and a pen and paper and start taking some notes!
You will have to borrow or buy a few things to get ready for the Dutch oven adventures. You do not need a ton of tools, but there are a few a must-haves that you don’t want to be without. Here is a list of the essential tools you will require for your Dutch cooking.
Tools Needed
Here are the essentials of Dutch oven cooking.
• Dutch ovens (one or more if you are cooking for a crowd)
• Charcoal chimney starter
• Charcoal briquettes
• Barbecue lighter or matches
• Lid lifter
• Something to put the lid on (a muffin tin is great)
• Heavy leather gloves
• Straw broom
• Cooking supplies
• Eating utensils
• High heat resistant gloves
• Scrapers, paper towels, and nylon scrub pads
• Lighter fluid, optional
Preparing & Seasoning Your Dutch Oven
Just as with anything, Dutch oven cooking adventure requires some preparation and planning. Purchase a Dutch oven earlier enough to ensure you’ve adequate time to season it; a Dutch oven that has been seasoned well makes it easier to cook and clean up. Dutch ovens should be treated just like pans and cast iron skillets; it’s the same process of preparation and care.
There are many ways of seasoning a Dutch oven, but they all have the same basic approach. Seasoning a Dutch oven prevents the metal from rusting, creates a nonstick surface making it easier to clean up, and adds a tasty subtle flavor that’s unsurpassed by other types of cookware.
Season your Dutch oven well and rub the inside with a small amount of oil each time you use it. Simply pour a little oil in the bottom of the Dutch oven and wipe the entire inside with a paper towel. You don’t need to wipe the outside with oil
