Before you start, you’ll need to familiarize yourself with the tones and sounds that are used in Mandarin Chinese. Use the Mandarin Tones table and the two Pinyin tables provided at the back of this book to help you.

Once you have a basic understanding of the sounds and how to read them in Pinyin, you are ready to begin the lessons.

Pinyin is actually easy to learn and you’ll get used to it when you start reading it in the sentences.

Practice saying them often and say the tones slowly. Don’t slur your words. In English, sometimes we add words together when we say complete sentences. This is not the case in Chinese. Each Chinese word is spoken separately. Be aware of this when learning to speak Mandarin Chinese. You don’t want to develop a bad habit.
