Miner's Kids Stories - The Blokehead
ABOUT MINECRAFT
Minecraft is a sandbox construction game, which means that it is a nonlinear, open world video game. Games that are considered open world are those in which a player can freely roam throughout the game and choose where he wants to go or how he wants to handle the challenges he meets. Minecraft is a true sandbox game in that it allows the player to modify the virtual world around him and therefore shape his own playing experience. There are multiple game modes and the game play itself relies on how the player makes and breaks various block structures throughout the world, as well as how he interacts with other players on a multiplayer platform and which game mode he chooses.
The most basic item in the game is the block. Blocks can be mined and used however the player wants and are the units that make up the virtual world. The most common are natural blocks, which occur naturally and are already in the world when the world is created. These blocks are air, bedrock, clay, dirt, and ice, among others. Ores such as gold, diamonds, and iron require the player to mine them with a pickaxe and minerals are blocks of nine of its ores. Minerals are created when its corresponding ores are placed in a 3x3 square on their crafting table – such as a block of gold, block of diamond, etc. – and are generally used for their looks. Plants are natural parts of the virtual word and can be influenced by the player and other blocks are various items that can be created by the player such as glass, fences, stairs, wool, and so on. The player creates utility blocks – beds, bookshelves, furnaces, etc. – and activates power providers. Power providers are buttons, torches, levers, and other similar providers. Mechanisms change their state or the state of something around them, such as dispensers, gates, and doors. There are additional blocks but these are the chief blocks and used for a majority of play in all modes. Almost of all these blocks can be acquired without using creative mode but some blocks require a silk touch enchantment, which allows the player to harvest a block in its original state rather than converting it to something else.
The first and main world of Minecraft is the Over-world. It is almost infinitely large and the only world with a day and night cycle, which lasts twenty minutes from one sunrise to the next. Daytime lasts for about ten minutes with a ninety second dawn and dusk and nighttime is about seven minutes. The Netherworld, similar to Hell, can only be accessed using a nether portal. It is a massive cave filled with lava and is lit by red glow. No water exists in the Netherworld and it is impossible for the player to sleep. Another dimension, the End, is a floating island made out of stone. Unlike the previous two dimensions, the End is finite in size and therefore its resources are limited. Like the Nether, there is no day and night cycle in the End and it is lit by a constant dim light.
Mobs are the only creatures in Minecraft and can be divided into Passive, Neutral, Hostile, and Boss mobs. Passive mobs are harmless and will never attack a player even when being attacked. They are mainly used for resources and include chickens, mushrooms, pigs, squids, and villagers. Neutral mobs begin as passive mobs but will attack when provoked by the player. What provokes the mob is different for each mob and wolves, endermen, and zombie pig men all fall into this category. Hostile mobs attack any player within its range without provocation and will continue its attack until either it or the player is dead or the player has moved out of its range. These mobs include cave spiders, creepers, skeletons, spiders, zombies, ghasts, and more. There are currently two Boss mobs in the game, the Ender Dragon and Wither, and both are very strong and attack in unique ways. All mobs need specific conditions for spawning and while they may behave like other mobs, each mob is unique and usually has unique abilities.
The game modes are entitled Creative, Survival, Hardcore, Adventure, and Spectator. The important thing to remember is that there is no one right
way to play the game. Creative mode is best for younger players or those looking to play without any real challenges; the only way to die in this mode is to either use the external kill
tool or fall into a void. Essentially a player cannot die unwillingly. The player has access to almost all blocks and does not have health, armor, or hunger. In Survival mode, the player must work to gather the necessary materials to survive and must manage his health, hunger, armor, and inventory while trying to
