Living And Dying In The Past
()
About this ebook
A bizarre journey between the present and the past (or the past and the present) that takes place between the living and the dead. I've used some real incidents, locations and people from my own past to serve as a framework for this strange tale that is part ghost story, part horror story and part fantasy. There are twists and turns around corners and hallways and an ending that will remind you of The Twilight Zone. Are you ready and willing to take this journey? Meet me on the Wildwood, NJ boardwalk at 3AM in the dead of winter and don't worry--no tickets will be sold at the entrance to Hunt's Pier!

I've been writing since my early teens, mostly lyrics and essays. I've recorded/narrated several audio books by some great writers that are all available on Amazon, Audible & iTunes. As a drummer I'm a former student of legendary drummer Ginger Baker and I work in my own home studio in the US. The audio versions of ECHOES and DON'T BADGER A BADGER are now available on Amazon, Audible & iTunes. The audiobooks were Narrated/Performed, Scored & Produced by me so I hope you enjoy them.

This story is dedicated to my classmates from New Milford High School from 1972 through 1976. They are some of the best and closest friends I've ever had and happily remain so to this very day. I am blessed to have each of them in my life and will treasure their friendship always.
This story is purely a work of fiction and is in no way meant to offend or disrespect any real events or persons that I've used as a basis on which to build any scenes or events used in this tale. It should be viewed solely as a work of fiction and nothing more. But after all it was my life, wasn't it?
Chapter One---The Phone Call
Three o'clock in the morning is not my most receptive time for receiving phone calls. I generally let my answering machine take the call unless it's a major emergency like a death in the family or a car accident, in which case I'll either try to grab the call before the other party hangs up or will immediately call them right back. But when someone calls up and claims to be a long dead relative of mine I do make exceptions providing that can prove they are who they claim they are.
Such was the case early one January morning. My wife and I had spent most of the day putting away the last boxes of Christmas decorations and watching some late season football, munching on homemade chili and other non-essential food to stay warm and motivated. By the end of that night we were both pretty exhausted and in desperate need of some good, deep sleep. By 3 AM we were both lost in our pillows and being very intimate with our eyelids when the phone on my wife's night stand suddenly rang.
Hullo.
said Maggie
May I speak to Anthony please?
Huh? Oh he's dead asleep right now. Who are you?
It's Richard. I'm his brother and I need to speak to him. Tell him it's important.
You're.....
and Maggie's voice suddenly trailed off as she was startled into consciousness. Honey it's your brother.
she said as she began shaking me frantically.
What? Oh tell that idiot that it's past my bedtime and to call me in the morning.
No it's not your west coast brother. He says it's Richard and it's important.
As I lay there in the darkness my eyes opened wide and I felt my heart suddenly begin to pound inside my chest. Richard had been dead since 1968, killed by a brain tumor shortly after he got out of high school. All of the painful memories of his untimely passing began to flood my mind rapidly as I grabbed the phone from Maggie's hand.
OK this better not be some sick prank. Who is this??
I nearly yelled into the receiver.
It's Richard. I need to talk to you.
Since I hadn't really heard Richard's voice in over 40 years the guy on the other end of the line did sound very familiar, but my defenses were still trying to wrap my head around what was going on. My brother has been gone since '68 and I don't appreciate anyone doing this....
I'm not playing around with you. Do you remember me waving to you as I got into Dad's car when Mom and Dad took me to the hospital? You were sitting on the front steps reading and you called out and said
Goodbye Rich, I hope you get better! Is that proof enough?
I lay silently in the dark with my heartbeat pounding in my head for a second before answering. OK so what do I ask you now? How are you? Or maybe what took you so long to call?
I was trying to be a bit humorous to try and fully comprehend what was happening.
I need to talk to you. You've got a problem with your life and I've been allowed to come and try to set you back on track before you mess things up.
Couldn't we talk this over in the morning. Why don't you come over and we'll make you some breakfast or something? I mean 'cause it's like 3 in the morning, man.
No. You need to meet with me now. I'm in Wildwood in a phone booth just off the boardwalk. You need to meet me on the boardwalk right near the Visitor's Center.
Wildwood?? Rich that place is deserted for the Winter right now and besides it's freezing out there! There must be ice all over the place and no lights on for miles!
Quit complaining and meet me here now. I've got to show you some things before it's too late.
OK man. I'll get bundled up and see you as soon as I get there. Do you still look the same? I mean....you know.....?
"Tony--I'm the only one here so I don't think you'll have any
