Sabrina found room 612 in the hotel.  Four chairs had been set up opposite the door.  A woman was already sitting on a chair.  Sabrina asked, ‘Hi, is this the waiting room for...whatever this is?’

The woman asked, ‘Did you get an invite?’  Sabrina was directly facing her so the woman was sitting on the last chair to Sabrina’s left.

Sabrina fished in her handbag and produced the invitation card.  She received it yesterday in the post.  In response the woman put her handbag on her lap and pulled out her own invitation.  ‘I guess we’re in the same boat,’ she said while returning the bag to the floor.  She rested the invitation card on her knee.

    Sabrina asked if she’d knocked.

‘There was no answer.  But we’re a few minutes early.  I suspect the door will open at exactly 10am.  I can just tell it’s going to be one of those anal sticklers who’s running this.’

‘And what is this?’ asked Sabrina.

‘My name’s Julia,’ said the woman as she put her hand out.  Sabrina shook it and said, ‘I’m Sabrina.  Do you know any more than what it says on the invite?’

‘Sit down.’  Sabrina sat on the chair beside Julia.  Julia said, ‘I take it four of us have been invited.’

    ‘What makes you say that?’

‘There’s four chairs.  Why put out five chairs when you’ve only invited four?’

‘Good point.  Is your invite the same as mine?’  Julia held up her card.  It said the same as Sabrina’s.  Which wasn’t much, only: ‘Leo Long invites you to a meeting at 10am on Saturday in room 612 at the Ambrax Hotel.  Additional guests will not be permitted.  Enclosed is money to pay for transportation.’  The money was a generous clutch of five twenties.

    ‘Pretty mysterious, huh?’ said Sabrina.

‘It’s not so much mysterious and incredibly vague.  A name and a location and no indication of what it’s about.  It doesn’t even tell you how casual or formal you should dress.  Which for a woman is just maddening.  Don’t they understand we have options?  That’s just annoying.  I was half in mind to blow it off and pocket the money.’

    ‘Why didn’t you?’

‘As you say, it’s kind of mysterious.  Why me and for what?  At worst it’s a wasted morning.  And for personal safety I should point out that of course my boyfriend knows I’m here.  If I don’t phone him before half ten he’ll call hotel security.’

‘Do you think we’re in danger?’

    ‘No.  It’s just in case.’

‘What do you think it’s about?’ asked Sabrina.

‘I really don’t know.  Do we have anything in common?’

‘There are so many possibilities.  We can’t just list them.  We could be here all day and never find out.  I mean it could be because we were once in the same playgroup when we were three years old.’

Julia asked, ‘What about this Leo Long character.  Does the name mean anything to you?’

    Sabrina shook her head.

Julia said, ‘Internet searches threw up a few people so I couldn’t narrow it down to a specific person.  As far as I can tell none of them are based here.  But then they can travel for business, so that doesn’t mean much.’

‘It was a dead-end for me too.’

They both looked over to the end of the corridor to see another woman walking towards them.  She was glancing at the door numbers.  Julia called, ‘Looking for 612?’

    ‘Yes,’ said the woman.

‘That’s us.  Come join us.  I’m Julia.  And this is Sabrina.’

‘Hi,’ she said as she reached them and shook their hands.  ‘I’m Monica.  Are we to wait here?’

Sabrina answered.  ‘We guess so.  Julia knocked and didn’t get a response.’

Julia explained her theory.  ‘I suspect they’re the anal-type to only open the door right on the dot when the clock
