Boons and Banes of Kriya Yoga - A.N Pandey
BOONS AND BANES OF KRIYA YOGA
1. INTRODUCTION
1.0 How existence emerges?
Existence emerges under the influence of many factors but three factors are prominent. They are body, mind and soul as accepted by all the religions of the world. Without body there is no existence. Likewise, without mind there is no existence. Similarly, without soul/ spirit there is no existence. All are interdependent. The image describes interdependency and endorsement of science on religion, philosophy and yogic concept.
When body (energy), mind (space) and psychic force (consciousness) are achieving completeness (wholesome effect); then consciousness or psychic force represents soul or spirit or Bindu (Nuclei).
For example, all the religions accept body, mind and soul concept. This means body and mind is controlled by the soul or consciousness as the indicator of the balance governs the equalization of two pans (body and mind). Similarly, in the case of science the wholeness effect is experienced when the energy and space are harmonized and consciousness works as a controlling element for the both. Likewise, the Indian philosophy (Sankhya philosophy) endorses the concept of science or religion (explained above). According to it (philosophy) Prakriti and Purusha are the responsible of creation and both are ruled by awareness (Hosh).
The Yoga explains the existence of these three forces in the human body so that concepts explained above can be compared. For instance, Yoga visualizes that energy and space are functioning through Pingla and Ida path of the body and both are linked or hooked up by the third force (known as psychic force) and the same is existing in Sushumna. These explanations clearly indicate that there is an ambiguity in philosophy, religion, yoga and science. All are working on the same principle while explaining the principle, purpose and process of creation.
1.1 Where do they exist in human being and what is their role?
The existence of the body (Known as Pranic force) is connected with left hemisphere and working in right side of the body (known as Pingla path). Likewise, existence of mental force is connected with right hemisphere and working at left side of the body (Pingla path). Similarly, psychic force (shown as controller of Pranic and mental force) is connected with higher mind and the same is functioning in Sushumna path. When Ida and Pingla paths are balanced Sushumna opens up and there will be vertical pull on psychic force (ruler of pranic and mental force) to lift up the higher mind from the lower level to the extent possible.
1.2 Relation between existence and Kriya yoga
To understand the inception of existence, which starts at top back of the head, we have to understand the certain methodology adopted by the Indian seers. Among many, Kriya yoga is very prominent and powerful method for uniting the three forces of existence and the same has to be realized at top back of the head.
Kriya Yoga, widely known in Eastern Part of India, is given in different forms to aspirants by different Gurus. In Guru Shishya Parampra (tradition of Master – disciple), is existing in established traditions and the same is being transferred from one Guru to another. For example, Kriya Yoga was transmitted from Baba Ji to Lahari Mahashya to Yukteswar Swami to Paramhansa Yogananda Ji.
But another form of Kriya Yoga is also developed by different Acharya based on their experiences. For example, Kriya Yoga given by SKY (Simplified Kundalini Yoga) in the form of Kaya Kalpa
(to retain the youth hood of the body) and other associates of Yogada Satsang differ in certain extent.
This made me conscious to know the actual or original concepts of Kriya Yoga described in Veda or in Upanishad. Fortunately, Yoga Chudamani Upanishad
also known as Crown Jewels of Yoga" provides the clear concepts of Kriya Yoga related to its basic principles, purpose, methodology, benefits, Limitation with precaution.
1.3 What is Yoga Chudamani Upanishad?
Upanishads related to Yoga existed many years before Yoga Chudamani Upanishad came into existence. Yogic Upanishads deal with major aspects like Kundalini, Laya, Nada, Mantra and Hatha. The Yogic Upanishads were composed after Yoga Sutra
of Patanjali and form an important part of Yogic literature. The earliest Yogic Upanishads are certainly Pre-Patanjali & are composed between the completion of Vedic hymns around 1000BC and classical Yoga period which arose 300BC. In the early Upanishad like Brihadaranyaka and Chandogya, different Vidyas or meditative disciplines are described, but nowhere were they codified as in Patanjali Yoga sutra.
Yoga Chudamani is crown jewels of Yoga. It is comprised of 121 mantras which deal with the practices of Kundalini Yoga as a means to attain the heights of Vedanta philosophy. The author and origins of Yoga Chudamani text probably emerge from Sama – Veda
, probably dates back to the period between 700 - 1000AD. Some scholars have related the practical content of their text with Hatha Yoga.
Yoga Chudamani is a manual of Higher Sadhana which is meant for advanced and initiated aspirants. While describing the mantra, the text points out the necessary means of transformation which leads to an experience of the deeper aspects of Yoga sadhana and it culminates in the experience of consciousness and self realization. This way, the
