Amy Richie

Amy Richie has lived in a small town her entire life. She lives with her three kids and their cats, George and Ellie. She began writing in high school but never took it seriously until a few years ago. She enjoys writing because it takes her out of her everyday life and gives life to the people in her head. “When I was little I wanted to be a mermaid, then when I was in high school I wanted to be a vampire; now as an adult I’m a writer, which is better because now I get to be both.”

    This One Night

    Chapter 1 :

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to fly? Her face tilted upwards until it caught the light from the almost full moon.

Like in an airplane? I pulled my jacket tighter to my chest, pausing slightly to take in how fast my heart was hammering along.

Angela had always been just a little different than other girls; maybe that was why I liked her so much. Or maybe it was the way she pushed her full lips out to a frown when I hesitated to come out and meet her.

I was no goody two shoes, but 1:30 in the morning was pushing it – even for Angela.

Not in an airplane, she grinned, shaking her head hard enough to make the pony tail she had piled high on top of her head bounce. Just to fly free.

I... I sucked in a breath, already trying to find an excuse to go back inside. No, I haven't, I finished lamely.

We're not even old enough to drive a car yet, she sighed.

I watched as her lips pushed out from her mouth again, wondering suddenly what it would feel like to kiss a girl like Angela Lake.

Not much longer though, I offered with an awkward smile. Hopefully she wouldn't be able to tell where my thoughts had strayed to. A few more months.

Maybe for you, Jacob, her full bottom lip disappeared inside her closed mouth, not for me.

Besides my nan on dad's side, who only saw me twice a year – Angela was the only one who called me Jacob. No matter how many times I told her not to.

Well, I swallowed back my words, unsure if I should be making a promise I wasn't sure I could keep. She looked at me, her dark blue eyes that I swear turned purple the longer I looked at her, were opened as wide as her eyelids would allow.

    Well what? She prompted.

When I get my license, I lurched ahead anyways, I'll give you a ride. My mom says she'll buy me a truck when I turn sixteen.

It'll be too late by then, she half smiled.

Too late for what? Like 1:30 in the morning wasn't late.

Well, she wiggled her eyebrows playfully, who knows, by then maybe I'll have flown away already.

I stood there awkwardly, not sure what kind of response she was waiting for as she stared at me. You can just wait to fly, I shrugged.

When I was little, she crouched low to the ground, bending even lower down to the sidewalk, I wanted to be a mermaid so I could swim with the sharks.

Sharks? Why couldn't she try normal on for once and say dolphins?

They wouldn't eat mermaids, she giggled.

    Oh yeah, I almost forgot
