Getting Started
This simple guide is designed to get you started with playing solos in the blues and rock styles. This method is filled with decades of lessons that I’ve learned:
Some the hard way: That is, on the bandstand, in the studio or through my frustration. Many mistakes that I’ve made were due to the arrogance of youth and ignorance of ego.
Some the easy way: I listened to my teachers, mentors, fellow musicians, and, yes, my students. The last group has taught me more than the aforementioned groups put together.
The rest, through experience: Many insights were revealed to me as I continued my journey. I needed to learn A before understanding B.
Many of us learn how to play the guitar in the same way. That is, we learned how to play a couple of power chords, open chords and then some riffs. A few lessons later, we added the pentatonic box pattern and... Formed a band!
A Shaky Foundation
Although this method of learning is fun; eventually, you want to take it a little more seriously. And, maybe you’re not a fan of classical and jazz (two styles that offer a more formal training path). You’re an electric guitarist and want to play play cool tunes that are fun. But, you realize that there are many holes in your foundation. Quite simply, you don't know what you don't know...
Solidifying that Foundation
This is where learning, understanding, and playing the blues can help. There are tons of chords, chord progressions and song forms with rules that will offer you some guidelines with what, where and how to improve. Also, the blues is packed with scales, riffs, licks and lead guitar techniques that every player should know. This provides you with an encyclopedia of things that you need to learn, work on and play.
The blues is a jamming culture. Blues jams are common places for players to congregate, share ideas, play together and put into practice what they’ve been working on.
