When you look in the mirror, do you like what you see, or are you unhappy with your reflection? Our perception of our own bodies can be accurate or drastically distorted.
CHAPTER ONE
Think about your relationship with your body. Do you appreciate it for all the things it does? It is a complex system that allows you to run, jump, lift, stretch, and even learn new things in school. But you might not consider all the functions your body performs because you are focusing on how it appears when you look at yourself in the mirror. You might compare yourself to someone at school or your favorite movie star and assume that the person has a better life than you because he or she is thinner and more attractive.
This is what’s known as a negative body image, and it can get in the way of developing into a happy, healthy human being. In today’s society, body image is more than just the mental picture you have of what your body looks like. For many, body image is also a reflection of how they feel about themselves and their lives. People with a negative body image believe that if they don’t look right, other things, such as their personality, intelligence, social skills, or capabilities, also aren’t right. They think that if they fix their
