Introduction
To succeed in workplace safety, organizations need good information, the ability to be a good leader, and the intelligence and inner strength to make good decisions regarding the safety of employees. Unfortunately, thousands of workers die each year, and many more suffer injury or illness from workplace conditions (Wardrop, 2001). An effective accident prevention program requires proper job performance from everyone in the workplace. The first step to organizing an outstanding workplace safety plan is to adopt a zero-accidents goal (Slaughter and Ghormley, 1991). History shows that poorly managed projects tend to have both poor productivity and safety, whereas better managed projects tend to have better productivity and safety Gibson, 1992). Greater emphasis should be placed on the early phases of safety project planning and development so that a safety project is not allowed to get out of control.
The purpose of this book is to analyze and contrast the research and literature on work place safety as it relates to incentives and employee attitudes. The writer will first define safety culture. Second, OSHA and the lack of safety issues will be discussed. Third, the leadership factors and safety training will be analyzed. Finally, the safety incentives and employee attitude toward safety in the workplace and a conclusion will be laid out.
Workplace Safety
As organizations move away from traditional and hierarchical management styles, a growing number of organizations are taking steps to involve the people at the sharp end of production in safety management. In light of the staggering numbers attributed to workplace injuries, organizations are recognizing the value associated with keeping the workplace safe. There is a link between workplace safety and a company’s performance (Gregg, 2001). He identifies three benefits for improving workplace safety: reducing employee pain and suffering; avoiding the direct cost of workplace injuries; and preventing the indirect costs of these injuries, which include lower employee morale, lost productivity and the expense of hiring or training overtime (Gregg, 2001). Safety is not a luxury in the organizations, where safety programs are the first lines of defense against unnecessary loss of life, property, and injury.
Geller (1994) writes, Behaviors which reduce the probability for injury often involve environment change and produce attitudes consistent with the safe behaviors, especially if these behaviors are viewed as voluntary
(pp. 29-34). In other words, when employees choose to act safely, they act themselves into safe thinking and such behaviors often result in some environmental change.
