This book is dedicated to my dad, Elmer, for believing in what happened that night and staying strong. And to my mom, Glorine, who believed in him and stuck behind him through it all.

And I looked, and behold, a whirlwind came out of the north, a great cloud, and a fire infolding itself, and a brightness was about it, and out of the midst thereof as the colour of amber, out of the midst of the fire.

Also out of the midst thereof came the likeness of four living creatures. And this was their appearance; they had the likeness of man.

And every one had four faces and every one had four wings.

And their feet were straight feet; and the sole of their feet was like the sole of a calf’s foot; and they sparkled like the colour of burnished brass.

And they had the hands of a man under their wings on their four sides; and they four had their faces and their wings.

Their wings were joined one to another; they turned not when they went; they went every one straight forward.

As for the likeness of their faces, they four had the face of a man, and the face of a lion, on the right side; and they four had the face of an ox on the left side; they four also had the face of an eagle.

Thus were faces; and their wings were stretched upward; two wings of every one were joined one to another, and two covered their bodies.

And they went every one straight forward; whither the spirit was to go, they went; and they turned not when they went.

As for the likeness of the living creatures, their appearance was like burning coals of fire, and like the appearance of lamps; it went up and down among the living creatures; and the fire was bright, and out of the fire went forth lighting.

And the living creatures ran and returned as the appearance of a flash of lighting.

Now as I beheld the living creatures, behold one wheel upon the earth by the living creatures, with his four faces.

The appearance of the wheels and their work was like unto the colour of a beryl; and they four had one likeness; and their appearance and their work was as it were a wheel in the middle of a wheel.

When they went, they went upon their four sides; and they turned not when they went.

As for their rings, they were so high that they were dreadful; and their rings were full of eyes round about them four.

And when the living creatures went, the wheels went by them, and when the living creatures were lifted up from the earth, the wheels were lifted up.

Whithersoever the spirit was to go, they went, thither was their spirit to go, and the wheels were lifted up over against them; for the spirit of the living creature was in the wheels.

When those went these went; and when those stood these stood, and when those were lifted up from the earth, the wheels were lifted up from the earth, the wheels were lifted up over against them; for the spirit of the living creature was in the wheels.

And the likeness of the firmament upon the heads of the living creature was as the colour of the terrible crystal, stretched forth over their heads above.

    Ezekiel 1:4–22

    Prologue

June 17, 1808, Kentucky. Just north of the newly named Hopkinsville in Christian County, a young family is traveling west to homestead in western Kentucky. The family is headed for Madisonville, where the man’s older brother purchased a large piece of land, and the two families are going to work together. The store owner tells them that they were fortunate to find him, since he was just going to the marriage of Robert Davis and Jane Blythe. They tell the owner that they were lodged at the Wayfarers Rest out in Fairview last week, and the couple out there just had a young baby. They named him after the president Jefferson, and their name was Davis too. They leave the small feed-and-grain store and decide to make a few more hours of travel. As they are leaving, they look to the sky and see a bright shining streak coming to the earth north of them. The feed-and-grain man sees it and tells the family they may want to wait and leave in the morning, since it is an ominous sign. But they continue.

July 14 1808. A young man on horseback arrives at the store, and he claims to be looking for the couple who had been at his store the month before. The owner tells him he had seen them, and it wasn’t long ago. The rider asks if there have been Indians in the area, but the owner tells him he hasn’t seen any. He also tells the young man about the evil sign in the sky the day he met the young couple.

There are tales such as these throughout history. Even in biblical times there were fires in the sky and things seen that no one understood; they were just taken as a sign from God. Today in our time there are still many things that man just can’t figure out, and yes, we still like to think that there are signs from God. A lot of things we try to rationalize, and our technology likes to pick everything apart. For example, we have the case of Roswell, a well-known story that has been played over in our minds time and time again. A case so well known and spread across the nations that they have a festival every year where people come from all over the world to see where the spacecraft landed. A case that will not die, simply because it is so dominant in the history of unidentified flying objects, and it seems the media won’t let us forget it. Every time you turn on the television and come upon a UFO show, more than likely Roswell will be on it. Of course, it is supposed to have been proven that what they found was a weather balloon. Real or not? Was there a cover-up by our government? Do our government officials really know what’s going on out there? There is a possibility that they know no more than we do. There are a lot of people who think there was a cover-up with Roswell, which is part of the appeal. Will we ever learn the truth of Roswell? I think most of us want it left alone because of our fascination with the unknown. We really don’t know for sure if there are other life forms out there, and some of us want it kept that way. We like to believe in the possibility, and just like with some of our legends, if we knew the truth the magic would be gone.

It seems like we have our UFOs in surges. The 1940s brought a surge of unidentified flying objects, and it seems this is when we really started to take notice. All at once people from all corners of the world were seeing things in the skies that couldn’t be explained. Is it just a coincidence that they didn’t start really appearing heavily till after we dropped the bomb on another country? Maybe even earlier
