A Perfect Day in Dubai
9.00am
Gold and spices
After breakfast in your hotel, head to the glittering Gold Souk in Deira, exploring the gold shops and adjacent Spice Souk, perhaps combined with a visit to the nearby Al Ahmadiya School and Heritage House.
11.00am
Along the Creek
Hop on an abra for the five-minute ride across the Creek to Bur Dubai, and walk along the waterfront to Shindagha for views of Old Dubai. Retrace your steps back through the souk to emerge by the Juma Grand Mosque and Dubai Museum.
12.00pm
Historical interlude
Spend an hour exploring the excellent Dubai Museum – an essential point of reference for anyone interested in the city’s past.
1.00pm
Wind towers
Head down to the atmospheric Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood, with its marvellous old wind-towered houses, and grab a bite to eat at the beautiful XVA Café and Gallery.
2.00pm
Into the new city
Catch a cab or take the metro for the short journey south to the spectacular skyscrapers of Sheikh Zayed Road. Get out at the iconic Emirates Tower and walk down the strip, admiring the eclectic high-rise architecture en route.
2.30pm
Shopping
From the bottom of Sheikh Zayed Road bear left down Financial Centre Road to reach the main entrance to Dubai Mall. Spend some time here browsing the shops, visiting the in-house aquarium or going for a spin on the ice rink.
3.30pm
Up to the top
Exit through the back of the Dubai Mall to reach the heart of the Downtown Dubai development, with the Dubai Fountain in front of you and the huge Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest building, to your right. Head into the Burj and ride a high-speed elevator up to the At The Top observation deck (you will need to have booked this in advance) for sweeping views of the city.
4.30pm
Sail of the century
Catch a cab and head down to the stunning Madinat Jumeirah complex, explore the Madinat’s souk, canals and shops, and then enjoy the unforgettable views of the sail-shaped Burj Al Arab next door over a sundowner at the Bahri Bar.
7.00pm
Arabian night
There is a vast range of superb places to eat all around the Madinat Jumeirah – the canalside venues are particularly lively after dark and a great place to people- watch. After dinner, catch a tram for the short trip down to the One&Only Royal Mirage hotel and head for the gorgeous little Rooftop Bar, which often has a DJ later on.
Introduction
Nowhere is quite like Dubai. In the space of barely four decades, the city has transformed itself from a modest Arabian trading town, which few outside the region had ever heard of, into one of the planet’s most glamorous, futuristic and talked-about destinations, home to the world’s tallest building, its biggest shopping mall, its largest man-made island and a host of
