The Complete Book of Succulent & Cacti: - Jack Rowling

    Six

    CHAPTER ONE

    Introduction

Cactus plants are indigenous to the American continents while Succulents in general was native to many northern Europe regions as well the Far East. However, most of the species were concentrated in the region of southern, western and eastern Africa continent. Christopher Columbus has been labelled as the first person to have taken the first cactus to Europe, and this he presented to Queen Isabella of Spain. The plants then was regarded as weird and leafless plants. Meanwhile other explorers such as Vasco de Gama discovered succulents in south-western Africa and India. Major expeditions for the plants started in the late 15th century during the race to find a western sea route to India and during these expeditions, new species of plants were found and brought to Europe. As interest in succulents grew, more expeditions were performed. Between 1777-1787, the King of Spain, King Charles III had sponsored several expeditions to the Americas hemisphere. These many expeditions led to cacti and succulents being constantly introduced to cultivation.

The Cactus family is one of the many groups of the other succulents. Succulents and Cacti differs from other species because of their ability to survive harsh climatic conditions and drought. For instance, succulents have adapted to the semi-deserts and arid climates of deserts while succulents also evolved in the cold regions of Europe, where they survived in the rocky soil and strong winds. Other species of succulents adapted the jungles of central and South America, and also evolved on the beaches with extremely high concentration of salt. Succulents have the natural ability to store ingredients in their stems, leaves and roots. This is why the Latin word succulent is succos which means juice.

Succulents and Cacti have developed several different textures and outlook depending on their environment and the climate of their habitation. For instance some plants that thrive on high altitudes with fog have felted or hairy surfaces that enables them to trap in moisture. In the regions where the temperature is a bit hotter than the temperate region, the lightly-colored folage reduces their absorption of heat. Also they have a waxy layer known as cutin. The leaves of Succulent and the stems of cactus have few stomata/surface pores which reduces precipitation. In cacti as well as many other succulent plants, the pores closes during the day and are opened in the night when the temperature is low and the body opens
