INtroduction to Written Crochet Patterns
In this chapter we’ll learn the basics of written patterns. This includes the common abbreviations, pattern repeats, and the components of a written pattern.
Abbreviations
Designers used a standardized set of abbreviations for stitches and techniques. You may have other abbreviations specific to your design. If you do, be sure to include them in the key to the pattern and an explanation in the notes.
Pattern Repeats
When you design a pattern, you won’t want to write out each and every instruction and pattern repeat. If you did the pattern would be very long and confusing. This is why designers use pattern repeats to denote a set of stitches to be repeated across a row or round.
Pattern repeats are indicated by asterisks, parentheses, or brackets. For example, if you wanted your pattern to have a set of shells running across a row or round you may write *3dc, ch 1, sk 1 st*. Begin a the first * and work the stitches to the next *. Then go back and begin at the first * again for the specified number of times, or to the end of the row or round.
