      Chapter One: Hard Work Pays Off

      It’s not that often that I have dinner with my wife at home, but tonight is a special occasion.  We have been given the construction contract for one-half the homes in the Northridge Estate development.  This job will keep our small construction business in the black for the next six months, and my wife and I have decided to celebrate this builder’s windfall.

      Twenty homes? Jamie asks for what must be the third time since we had the bid accepted.

      Twenty, I reply with a smile on my face.  "I guess the developer liked our bid and plans.

      My wife nods her head.  But not enough to give us all forty of the homes?

      Sighing, I put my fork down beside my plate.  Well, it turns out that there was very little difference between our bid and the Martin bid.  So, they split the difference and decided to go with both of us.  I try to keep a happy face about all this, but Blane Martin has been a thorn in my side since high school.  We have competed in some way for the last twenty years, especially as it has had to do with our two construction companies.  His bigger, family-owned affair has been around for nearly eighty years and my business was started less than ten years ago.  It is sometimes a David versus Goliath battle to win contracts in the valley, but I have been having more success at doing so over the last five years.

      Blane can be an asshole, can’t he?

      Jamie, I laugh while shaking my head.  Surely you don’t mean that.

      I absolutely mean it, Kevin.  He always tries to swoop in and steal anything you are trying to do.  It’s as if he wants to close down your construction business.

      Well, I would love to shut him down too, I laugh.  You know, it’s just business, honey.  Don’t worry about all the back and forth between the two of us.

      My wife turns her attention back to the chicken fried steak I have cooked up for her and takes another bite.  Though the meal is mostly out of a box, I did make the rolls from scratch when I cooked dinner tonight.  I like to cook.  Doing so allows me the freedom to be a little creative while treating the love of my life to good food.  Of course, I should probably expect the same from her on occasion, but the fact of the matter is Jamie is a terrible cook and I prefer to enjoy my dinner instead of tossing it into the trash bin.

      I am the decorator on all twenty homes, right?  Jamie looks at me as she smiles. 

      Of course, my love.  I would have it no other way.  She has been an interior designer for the last ten years and over that time she has worked alongside me to stage homes for sale.  The property owner has asked me to bring on a designer to help set up their homes, so for the extra money, I was more than happy to ask Jamie to do the job.

      That’s nice.  She turns her attention back to her plate and runs her fork a time or two through her mashed potatoes.  Just as I also take a bite of food, my wife asks me, Is this going to help our private life as well, Kevin?  Working together and being a team for the next few months?

      I sigh as I consider the question.  Jamie and I have had our ups and downs over the course of our marriage of thirteen years, and many of those downs have been more recently.  Unfortunately, sex has become relegated to a secondary or even tertiary level of need in our home, and that has put some strain on the two of us together.  I answer the question cautiously as I tell her, You know that working together will give us a chance to strengthen our bonds with each other, my love.  This is a great opportunity for both of us. 

      Jamie nods her head.  Maybe.  Still, I think there is a huge pink elephant sitting in the room that we need to get out of the way, Kevin.  Don’t you?  My wife puts her fork down and stares hard at me with her dark brown eyes.  Jamie is a beautiful woman, her hair and eyes both a dark brown and her skin golden in tone.  It’s her Sicilian background that influences her appearance, and I have always found these physical attributes incredible seductive.

      Please, Jamie.  Can’t we just let that go?  We have talked about it and talked about it since last week.

      She shakes her head, her shoulder-length hair moving across her shoulders.  I still don’t understand why you would do something like that, Kevin.  Has our sex life gotten so boring that you are willing to go to that sort of thing for a quick fix?

      After putting down my fork, I lean back in my chair and sigh.  Jamie, I don’t know what else I can tell you.  It was a stupid thing to do, but it doesn’t happen all the time.  It was a weak moment, at least in my mind.  I had decided to look up some leaked nude photographs of a certain actress on my cell phone after hearing on the news about their existence.  Though I knew Jamie was in the bedroom just a few steps away, I thought I could quickly
