About this ebook
Most smokers want to quit, but are too terrified of the void they believe awaits them on the other side of the smoke screen to even try. J. F. Hunter integrates his own life experience and vital neuroscientific research in this unique book of daily readings specifically designed to provide reassurance and motivation during those critical first days and weeks after quitting.
According to modern neuroscientific findings, it takes 40 days to create new neural pathways and, effectively, rewire the brain. Once we quit smoking, we begin the process of breaking the links and associations that have formed part of our smoking habit for years, sometimes even decades. The purpose of this book is to facilitate this process, and accompany you on the path to becoming a happy, healthy non-smoker.
40 days is all it takes. So go ahead, and give change a chance.
J.F. Hunter
Although this book is inspired by modern neuroscientific research, I am no scientist. But I used to smoke. A lot. Whenever I possibly could, I’d plan my daily activities so they’d fit in with my precious smoking habit. And if I couldn’t, because I had to work or because my friends and family insisted on having lunch inside the restaurant, instead of sitting outside on the lovely terrace in the freezing cold wind, sleet and snow, I’d feel downright miserable. The whole thing was such a hard work, but I was an addict then, prepared to struggle on until the bitter end. Then one day, I had what I can only describe as a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moment of clarity that occurs all too rarely in an addict’s life. Even more amazingly, I acted upon it: I quit smoking. It took a little while for my brain to adjust, but I knew that the recalibration process was inevitable – providing I gave change a chance. So I stayed out of the way. Kept busy. Stuck my fingers into my ears and hummed whenever the old junkie head tried to break my resolve. Days passed, and they kept passing, until one day I suddenly realised that I was free. I really am a happy healthy non-smoker, today. I certainly don’t miss it. Life really is much better on this side of the smoke screen.

40-Day Companion to Quitting Smoking - J.F. Hunter
Life Begins At 40 Days
According to modern neuroscientific research, it takes 40 days¹ to create new neural pathways and, effectively, rewire the brain. Once we quit smoking, we begin the process of breaking the links and associations that have formed part of our smoking habit for years, sometimes even decades. The problem is, the brain has worked very hard on perfecting our existing behavioural patterns and is not likely to give them up without a fight. Luckily for us, this problem is also a solution: if we stop indulging in a certain behaviour for long enough, and persist in replacing it with a different activity, the brain will naturally create new links, and abandon the old ones. This is due to brain plasticity (neuroplasticity), and means that the brain cannot help but change and adapt as a result of experience.
40-Day Companion to Quitting Smoking is a collection of daily readings designed to provide reassurance and motivation during those critical first days and weeks after quitting. Each reading will confirm what you already know, but on some level still find hard to believe: there is a better, richer life awaiting you on the other side of the smoke screen.
1 the time it actually takes to create new neural pathways can vary from person to person. However, the scientists, yogis, alchemists and religious and spiritual folk of many traditions all agree that practicing anything for at least 40 days allows our brains the chance to fully integrate it into our daily routine FOR GOOD. In other words, it takes 40 days for a new habit to stick. Make 40 your magic number. Don’t smoke for 40 days, and who knows what might happen. All you need to do is give change a chance.
About This Book
I wrote this book for a simple reason: in the first days and weeks after I’ve quit smoking, I really could have done with a specific daily reading that soothed my anxiety, dispersed my confusion and helped put doubt on the back burner. But, despite the thousands of motivational and self-help books on the market, I failed to find one that spoke directly to me – a fledgling happy, healthy non-smoker – or at least not in the way I could relate to. It is my heartfelt wish that this book will provide you with the much needed encouragement and inspiration as you set off on your own personal path to freedom from nicotine addiction.
My Story
First of all, I am no scientist. Nor am I an alchemist. And although nowadays I do have a daily yoga practice, I am hardly a yogi. But I did smoke for many years. In fact, I was one of those belligerent smokers, determined to prove to myself and everyone else that my choice to pick up a cigarette was the
