Introduction
Have you ever cared for someone, or your job, so much that you take on the role of solving people's problems for them? Have you ever wished that someone you know could be independent in succeeding with their life and be truly happy? Have you ever wished that you did not have to keep telling someone that what they are doing is not helpful for them/they need to change, instead of them recognizing this themselves? I know I have, as a mother, as a friend, and the clients I support within my employment role. Not only can this pressure weigh us down, but it can also be detrimental for the person who we are molly-coddling as we are hindering their ability to develop their resilience. This is where Motivational Interviewing comes in. Motivational Interviewing is a technique that is typically used by professionals to support clients with making positive changes in their life, such as a convict to stop committing crime. However, due to the success of Motivational Interviewing in psychological literature, the interviewing technique is widely adopted in non-professional settings, too. For example, whether you use the skills to support a family member, or a friend, or someone you know that finds themselves stuck
in life. This book will guide you through the core principles of Motivational Interviewing and how to initiate positive change in others. I will talk you through practical examples of how you can coach the person to come to their realization of the benefits of making positive change, as opposed to feeling like we are forcing them. Motivational Interviewing is the key to helping others succeed, and this book will equip you with all the practical guidance required to put these skills into practice.
