**Thank You to my Sister Terri for this!
~Two Libras meet~
Melissa and I met when we were teenagers in the Syracuse, NY area where we grew up. We were born on the same day, but I was two years older. Melissa had just moved to our neighborhood when I was in tenth grade. I remember meeting Melissa officially when she was walking around the neighborhood with Jim Dodge. Melissa had a great smile and an even cooler jean jacket! I think we were drawn to each other because we both were struggling with not having our fathers in our lives and having stepfathers that were abusive.
Melissa was very shy, and I spent the next 30 years reminding Melissa to hold her head high because she always looked down at the ground. By the time I was a senior in high school, we were pretty close, and I even arranged a date for Melissa to come to the senior ball with me and my boyfriend. That night was a lot of fun for everyone, and I was very excited that Melissa got to share that memory with me. During my senior year, I also convinced Melissa to join CYO cheerleading which was a lot of fun and became a way for us to meet boys from other high schools. We used to go to the Sports O’Rama to roller-skate and over to Penn Can Mall as often as Melissa’s mother Irene, would allow.
I was definitely the more adventurous one. There were a few times that my shenanigans got us in trouble. One was when I skipped class on senior skip day and Mike D gave us a ride to school so I could get a book for a paper (unfortunately… Mr. Shupe caught me but that is for another story) and word got back to Melissa’s mom that we were in a car with a BOY (gasp – eyes rolling). Then another time when we camped
out in my backyard and my brother Mark and some friends (who were drunk) woke us up in the middle of the night for an impromptu trip to Dunkin Donuts. Another time, Melissa came with me to the Fay’s Drugs (where I worked) camping trip in Fisher Pond and she stayed up all night with Jim Porter. Otherwise, I kept her safe from harm.
I had a gap year between high school and heading to college in New Mexico in 1986. We had a lot of fun during that year because both of our boyfriends had cars, so we were able to go places.
We shared many milestones and one that I will never forget is when Melissa had sex first before me! I gave Melissa a hard time about it when she called to tell me that she and her boyfriend John had sex because Melissa was only 16! I remember telling Melissa I am supposed to do everything first
because I am two years older. The funny thing is - I called my boyfriend Joe right away and told him we had to have sex because Melissa and John did. I kid you not! Probably just as well that I headed off for college having my first sexual experience with someone that I loved and trusted at that time. Otherwise, I was literally too scared to have sex – I can thank the years of church school for that!
The next few years flew by with me in college in New Mexico and Melissa finishing out her high school years. When I returned home to Syracuse in 1988- Melissa was in college at SUNY Buffalo and one of the first situations in which I became the rescuer, happened.
I was living with my boyfriend Rob at the time, who subsequently became my husband. Melissa had called and was distraught because she had found out her boyfriend back home in Syracuse had gotten someone pregnant. Melissa seemed inconsolable and I convinced Rob that we had to drive the two and a half hours from Syracuse to Buffalo to make sure Melissa was okay.
I am not quite sure why I was always so protective of Melissa and became even more so, as the years went on. Later, it became apparent to those close to me that when Melissa needed help – I dropped everything and accommodated her.
I visited Melissa a few times while she was in college and was aware that she was partying a little bit too hard for someone who kept saying she was going to go to medical school.
I do know that Melissa had to go on an archaeology dig in Israel to try to get into medical school as her college grades and test scores were not up to par and she was not able to get into medical school after she graduated from college. Melissa subsequently went to NYITCOM in Long Island with the help from her grandfather.
The early 90’s was tough for us to communicate- being I was in Oklahoma and Melissa was in medical school in New York. I did, however, attend Melissa’s medical school graduation with Rob and our two children in 1996.
By then, Melissa had already met Aaron, decided to convert to Judaism (orthodox) and was making plans to get married. I was to be her maiden of honor, much like she was mine when I married Rob (the first time – again for another story).
The woman behind the façade
Melissa and I were a lot alike in that we each had some underlying issues due to our real fathers being absent from our lives. This made us both susceptible to the flirtations of men that were not our husbands or boyfriends. We both were not faithful to our first husbands, but Melissa was able to hide her transgressions much better with being at the hospital so much. As an OBGYN – it was the perfect cover for Melissa to have affairs with numerous men. I started seeing a therapist to help me with my issues, but Melissa never did. Melissa was always having to have validation from men (any therapist will tell you, an indirect result from not having a father figure). Melissa even had an affair with a former high school obsession – Tim M, which I felt was way too risky and told her so. I really felt that Melissa never truly met the love of her life
as every single relationship she had – she cheated on them. It was really awkward one time, when Melissa told her current live-in boyfriend Jay that she was meeting me in Syracuse (when I was in Florida) so she could get together with someone she went to college with. (see picture below). Jay found out by going to Melissa’s house, where Chris was – NOT a good scene. But I digress…
Even though she converted to being an Orthodox Jew, some habits and things Melissa kept the same. However, in that Orthodox world, I felt like Melissa and her husband played the game of keeping up with the Jones’s
. When Melissa told me that they were moving into a 900-thousand-dollar house around 2004? (I think) – I asked her can you afford it?
and she stated that her husband said they could. I had my doubts and soon enough Melissa was having to work extra shifts at the hospital to pay for things. I did not understand the importance of monetary wealth in
