    Berlin Meredith began his collection of thoughts, quotes, poems and stories many years ago. After retiring from the Federal Government as a Veterans Benefits Counselor, he worked as a cashier at a local Big Bear Plus supermarket. While there, he began printing his "Thought of the Week" on strips of paper and giving them to each person who came through his check-out line. This was so well received that his many friends and customers encouraged him to put his collection of quotes in a book. This book contains many of his favorite quotes, thoughts, poems and stories. In addition, he has written several short stories and some of those stories are included in the book.

      In addition, I would like to dedicate this book in loving memory of my parents, Benjamin C. Meredith and Nellie Bellomy-Meredith, and my10 year old sister, Pamela Elaine Meredith. To my Father-in-law, King Joseph Hayton and my Mother-in-law, Ella Thompson-Hayton. They all left us way too soon!

      Preface

      I decided to write Keep Looking Up, at the request of my many friends and customers that came through my check-out line at Big Bear Plus in Ceredo, WV just to get my thought of the week.

      I would like to thank my loving wife Carol for encouraging me and assisting me

      all through the process of writing this book. She is my rock and my life’s helpmate. Thanks to my sons, Berlin Ray II and Brian Keith, my grandsons Joshua Tyler and Keenan Joseph and my daughter-in-law Kathy for making my life complete. I thank God for each of them.

      I would also like to thank God, my Heavenly Father, for helping me in this endeavor.

      ABOUT THE AUTHOR

      Born at Hubbardstown, WV in the late thirties, the author attended a small one room school with one teacher for students first through eighth grade. Even more unique than all those grades being taught by one teacher was the school itself. There was no electricity, water or heat except for a large coal burning stove which sat in the middle of the school room. Living in the country without the benefits of Boy Scouts, Little League and other like activities which are available in larger communities, his social life was limited. After moving to a larger school in Kenova, WV to begin ninth grade, he was backward and shy making it hard to fit in and make friends.

      He went through the usual teenage trials and temptations; however, with the exception of tobacco, he never used alcohol or drugs and lived a fairly mundane life. Completely unprepared, he started attending Marshall University (Marshall College at the time) in Huntington, WV in 1956. Not doing well and not wanting to be a financial burden on his parents he dropped out of college and began work. Hard manual labor at first but after a stint in the Army as a Chaplains Assistant, he moved into office work with the United States Government. Using his GI bill he returned to Marshall University and also attended George Washington University. His last position with the government was as a Veterans Benefits Counselor where he also served as the Training Coordinator and Congressional Liaison.

      Although he continued to be shy and backward, he pushed himself into situations where he had to participate and communicate publicly. Accepting positions as the President of the local Parent Teachers Association and singing lead and being the spokesperson for a gospel group forced him into public speaking and being more in the public eye. This led later to being on radio and TV programs. He has subsequently collected a host of honors and awards. These awards include the presentation of the Distinguished West Virginian Award from the Governor of West Virginia, a Humanitarianism Award and the Medallion of the Great State of West Virginia from the Secretary of State of West Virginia and a Key to the City of Huntington, WV from the Mayor. In addition, he recently received his 50 year Masonic pin.

      Even though he was successful in his work and extra-curricular activities, he was always more comfortable with the written word than the spoken word. A student of self-help books and tapes, he began to collect sayings, later turning them into lists of thoughts and quotes. He also collected sayings of his pastor and other preachers on radio and TV.

      Shortly after retirement from the Federal Government, he began working as a cashier at a local Big Bear Plus supermarket. He retired from Big Bear Plus just before they went bankrupt and took the position of Emergency Services Coordinator at the Wayne County Community Services Organization. After leaving there he worked in the accounting department of the local Heiner’s Bakery. He left Heiner’s to take a job as office manager for the Cabell County Youth Empowerment Program sponsored by the Huntington West Virginia Housing Authority. And, while there, he successfully bid on a position of Senior Services Coordinator where he works with the residents of the four senior high rises in a social worker position.

      While at Big Bear Plus he began printing out a thought of the week on strips of paper and giving them to the customers coming through his check out line. This led to some people actually waiting in his line to check out just to get his thought. He was anonymously nominated for and received the Hometown Hero award given by the local WSAZ TV News Station for his unique extra mile service at the Big Bear Plus.

      His thoughts were so well received that he was encouraged by many customers to put his collection in a book. The results you now hold in your hand. He is sharing some of his thoughts, quotes, poems and stories he has collected and enjoyed over the years. He hopes you enjoy reading these as much as he has enjoyed collecting them.

      1. Wake Up !!

      Decide to have a good day.

      2. Dress Up !!

      The best way to dress up is to put on

      a smile.

      A smile is an inexpensive way to improve your looks.

      3. Shut Up!!

      Say nice things and learn to listen.

      God gave us two ears and one mouth, so He must have meant for us to do twice as much listening as talking.

      4. Stand Up!!...

      For what you believe in.

      Stand for something or you will fall for anything..

      "Let us not be weary in doing well; for at the proper time, we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.

      Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good..."

      5. Reach Up !!...

      For something higher.

      "Trust in the Lord with all your heart,

      and lean not unto your own understanding.

      In all your ways, acknowledge Him,

      and He will direct your path."

      6. Lift Up !!...

      Your Prayers.

      "Do not worry about anything;

      instead PRAY ABOUT

      EVERYTHING."

      7. Hold On!!

      You are a child of God.

      He wants to protect you and provide for you in every way.

      But sometimes we foolishly wade into dangerous situations, not knowing what lies ahead. The swimming hole of life is filled with peril and we forget that the enemy is waiting to attack.

      That’s when the tug-of-war begins – but He did not and will not ever let you go.
