‘Five Minutes to Mindfulness is a gift for any parent or teacher who is searching for alternative ways of simplifying the lives of the children in their care or guidance. Dr. Ashleigh Stewart’s deep sense of compassion and care for children is revealed, and shines through in every page of this book. She writes with the wisdom, honesty, conviction and compassion that only a true visionary and transformational leader could possess. This book is a must-read for adults who are searching for ways to support their children that are beyond the societal ‘norm’.’
- Joseph Ghabi B.Msc. Bestselling Author and Founder of The Free Spirit Centre
Never before in the history of time have we seen the masses suffering from chronic stress, distress, fear and anxiety.
Unfortunately this is now being passed down to our children. As humanity faces a global shift of consciousness into one with a greater effect of the mind on the body, and the body on the mind, it has never been so urgent for the younger generations to learn to understand the practice of yoga and mindfulness, and how to implement it into their daily routine to help them cope with the struggles they face daily at school and at home.
Yoga offers a holistic body/mind/spirit system which enables us to tap into our body’s own intelligent technology within. This technology is like an inner pharmacy which can help us to balance, and maintain good health in the body, mind and spirit as one. However, it can only be accessed through the taming of the mind from the daily mental chatter we experience as a result of our stresses.
In this book, Dr. Ashleigh has defined and outlined simple yet effective strategies that parents and teachers alike can teach their children to use both in group settings, or individually one on one.
As an internationally renowned and well respected leader in our global Yoga community I myself would recommend this book to anyone who is looking for simple, yet effective ways to bring their children up mindfully, with a strong sense of self-awareness and an understanding of the power of their mind body and emotions.
- DrMadan Bali PH.D. Internationally renowned teacher, speaker and founder of Yoga Bliss Training and Research Institute Montreal.
"Dr Ashleigh has written a short, succinct guide to helping your child face the world with greater confidence and with exercises that will be fun and useful for the child for all its life. If every parent displayed Ashleigh’s conscientiousness and thoughtfulness about child-rearing and equaled her depth of affection we could all celebrate a new generation of well-grounded people.
Dr Ashleigh’s blend of mindfulness programs with ancient yogic practices is right on the money and now every parent has a winning formula to reach out with intimacy and a profound way of sharing which I believe may imbue each child with a strong value system. The child, as beneficiary of these exercises, will be emboldened by the wise mother’s love and concern for the mental well-being of her cherished children.
Work with Ashleigh and your children and witness the encouraging results."
Harry Langen, author.
Preface
Keep me away from the wisdom which does not cry, the philosophy which does not laugh and the greatness which does not bow before children.
-Kahlil Gibran
I AM WRITING this book to offer insight in light of the many struggles our children are going through in today’s fast-pacedfast pacedand hectic society. The intention of this book is to offer awareness combined with a practical tool to help adults better understand children.
When you understand children, it means you can help them to get to know themselves mentally and emotionally, which will in turn help them to better understand how they relate both with others and the world around them. It is my belief that when a child knows himself deeply, with a strong sense of self-power, confidence, emotional intelligence and integrity, the better he will be prepared to lead a successful and happy life imbued with purpose and fulfillment. I also believe that when a child is self-aware it helps to reduce the likelihood of the development of behavioral disorders, depression, anxiety and mental health issues that children are so frequently being diagnosed with these days.
Children aside for a moment, in a challenging societymany adults too mayhave a hard time knowing who they are and what they truly want. I believe when someone does not really know who they are, they cannot feel a true sense of fulfillment and purpose in life. We have been raised to believe that our sole purpose is to fit into a ‘one size fits all system’ that demands us to fit in at school; memorize facts on subjects; get a job; pay taxes;accumulate as much money as possible; climb the corporate ladder; have more kids, and then train them to do the same thing. It is unreasonable to slot anyone into a system that isn’t designed to suit everyone and then expect them to function at full potential, thriving with a sense of authentic fulfillment. It is also unreasonable to claim they are disordered or dysfunctional as a result.
Many of us are starting to awaken to the idea that it is okay to livea bit differently, and that it is okay to be creative and work with your own ideas outside of the
