DRAGONS DREAM
by
Richard Glyndwr Evans
Oh how I yearn to rest beside the river as it plies it’s coolness to far reaches. To bathe in it’s lushness as the water caresses me and cradles me too the sea.
But now, sadness is my lot!
For I must await my fate in the shadows of the mind whilst others gambol upon the soil that I once did freely tread.
I look too the skies and see the clouds that I did frolic in as a pup. But now I am chained too the reality of my being.
For I am to serve those who would have me do harm to others less expecting of such.
‘GO HERE’! They in their panic do yell at me!
‘GET YOU THERE’! They do shout at me!
‘KILL THESE OUR MORTAL FOES’! Do they command of me!
Oh! for the peace that will cover my body and save me, wretched creature that am I, from the continual death and destruction that I am commanded to reap upon such hapless souls that abound this Earth.
Oh how I wish that I could look too the sun one more time and see people live and play freely and kindly as did once my own had done.
But I am lost now to them who were, for I am the last and I am deserted by life of joy!
And condemned to the iniquity of this life of Hell!!

But I have never wanted to kill, nor to cause pain or distress, and yet I know that I do cause by my ugliness fear and unrelenting distrust and incomprehension of my kind does abound.
Upon my return to these people who so fondly sit so smug in their houses drinking their wine, gratified in their misplaced knowledge that I have dispatched their enemies with but a sweep of my tail or a beat of my wings. Or that I have consumed them with the heat and flames of my breath. That I have torn and mangled to shreds the miserable bodies of their enemies, and scattered them to dust. Or worse! That I have eaten their rotting carcasses and then strewn the bones as like feed for the carrion.
But no! None of these things have I done.
For the arrival in pomp and majesty of such as I has confounded the enemy. And I have striven to make them friends.
Oh sadness does entrap me as I still may see only the futility of the strife that is abundant.
And so I sit
