PREFACE
There are many motivations for writing a book. I needed none other than the one I received in an email from a woman who worked for me at a behavioral health company I founded thirty-two years ago. She is a psychologist and works in a clinical call center doing telephonic assessment, coaching and referring callers to mental health providers as appropriate. The COVID-19 pandemic has greatly increased the number of calls she receives and the intensity of those calls. In this case, the caller was an employee of a client company that provides employee assistance and mental health services. Desperate, on an early Friday morning, the 25-year-old young man called the 800 number on his health benefit card and spoke to the psychologist.
While my psychologist friend does not drive an ambulance or work in the ER of a hospital, she performed admirably that morning as a first responder
to a deeply grieving patient.
Her email reads:
"Dr. Sam, I need to share an experience that overwhelmed me last week. Most of you know I work as a mental health clinical case manager. I spend my day talking to people all over the country who need help. Last Friday, my first call of the day was from a 25-year-old man who was sobbing on the phone before I ever said hello. His uncle had died the previous day from Covid-19. He had another uncle who was in ICU and not expected to survive- from Covid-19. His mother and two younger brothers had been told the day
